Intervolometer
Get yourself a Canon TC-80N3 Intervelometer, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164271-REG/Canon_2477A002_Timer_Remote_Controller_TC_80N3.html
Dis-engage the lens from the body with a small twist to avoid "flicker", this is a must do
Set everything to manual, including white balance
Adjust your exposure, focus etc.
Press start and go have a beer whilst your camera fires away....easy
I work on a 25p timeline so 25 photos = 1 second of Video, depending on what you are timelapsing, I usually do a 250 shot 10 second timelapse.
Broadcasters (TV) will usually want only 3 or 4 sec. shots which = 75-100 photos
Of course you will need a tripod, I use this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1078671-REG/miller_2010_compass12_solo_75_3_stage.html bit of overkill but i shoot 4K motion as well

Hey Plug,
You'll find some good info here www.learntimelapse.com
I've only just started mucking around wih time lapses this year.
I shoot mine on a Panasonic GH3 which fortunately has time lapse features built in.
Even if they don't work out it's a grea tway to enjoy more sunsets and sunrises.
Here's a few recent ones... best in 1080p
