R.I.P. North Mole?
I'm kinda interested in what people think about this?
Personally i think it could go one of two ways, and public access to this area is what will make or break it for the rec fisherman. One way of looking at it is another huge, man made fishing platform that will offer better access, more room, and more structure for fisho's. But will this area have restricted access i wonder, residents only? That would be terribad for fisherman.
Anyway, just after some feedback, or info from anyone more enlightened than myself.
This is the entry to Freo Harbour by the way, with North Mole the southern most breakwater in the photo.

Hmmmm
I'm undecided Brett. Pros and cons I suppose. There has been commentry elsewhere on this development and valid points that have been made are the very limited access and some of the smells from the harbour.
From a boat launching facility point of view, it would be great to have an 'external' (to the heads) ramp(s) facility - anyone thats gone up and down river and through guage roads during peak times knows it's a REAL pain.
As you say, let's hope (should the development go ahead) that fishos have access to the (new) outer breakwater and they don't put up 'local traffic only' signs.
One thing, if they DO grant public access (as they should!) I've always find fishing of new rocks walls to be VERY productive!
No doubt there will be huge debate between the tree huggers and wallet stuffers

Access
Access is really the key here i guess, for fisho's to the wall, boaties to the ramp etc. I would suggest whatever ramp goes in will be a private ramp, looking also at things like parking areas for boat trailers/cars, which seems to be limited. Imaging how many boats would go out of there on a fine weekend if it was a public ramp?!
Frankly, considering the dollars going into these areas, some limitation on access is a gimmie i'm thinking. Also, the pocket of enclosed water in the middle there, wats going there? Ideas include a Baramundi hatchery, wave pool......

Im in two minds as well, looks fantastic with heaps of fishing potential but just seems like another playground for the rich. I think the money could be better spent aimed towards first home buyers and the struggling. I do agree that the boating facilities would help greatly

Exclusivity
One think I'm totally against is ANY (further) restiction to our water ways and sea fronts. If it turns out just to be a play ground for the rich with the developers just lining their pockets, then I'd be disgusted.
IF, on the other hand, the pweres that be have the forsight, fairness and public in view, and they at least address the dire shortage of public boat ramps in that area AND guarantee full public access to the new sea wall, then it could be a good thing.
I wouldn't want to see that development creating access to the 'chosen few'.
Lets also hope they get the environmental aspects right in respect of water flow and sand build up - there's been more than one development that has caused problems in that area.

Fishing Buggies
If they grant public access, they probably won't let rusty pin-striped fishos 4bys ruining the savour fair of the neighbourhood - so you'll probably have to hire a special fishing buggy (at an exhorbitant rate of course) so you can drive down the brick paved, toparised tree 'boulevard'
- and you'll have to wear cream silk slacks and fredd perry tops. (rolling eyes emoticon).

Many issues here......
It would be good provided access is maintained. The front wall would be in deep water - nice! It could be a great bream fishery if you are allowed to flick lures around the canals and boat pens but I doubt the rich kids would allow that.
Another question, during the building of this area there would be a lot of dredging, backfilling, etc to create the building platform. This may result in a lot of the resident fish's environment being damaged and them moving elsewhere which would then result in the big pelagics, etc, moving also. It could take quite a long time for them to start coming back. Also the front wall wont be as good a feature in that it doesn't 'jut' out into the ocean and create swirling currents aroudn it, this would in turn also prove less attractive to pelagics.
I am sure there will be many heated discussions on this one.

Cant see any boat ramp in the image
you will find out that fisho can access it, but there will be no parking so you will have to walk a mile.

Is that sand around the 'rock walls'. I can see theres wash, but just above it it looks a little yellow, then bitumen on top. Perhaps limestone.
I agree with having some rock groynes jutting out. They could even have 2 or three to reduce congestion.

Was having a flick at the North Mole this morning was a few blokes from "The West" were chatting with fishos about the proposal. Apparently there wont be any restrictions on access for rec fishos but who knows...
Over the long term I guess it would be great but then where are we all gonna go for a fish while its being developed?? I love fishing the North Mole

It will never happen. All
It will never happen.
All the toxins and chemicals that have been flowing out of the harbour for all these years will have caused some sort of mutated whelk. The boffins will declare it a new species only found here and the whole place will become a protected marine park.
