Penn 950 drag problems
Submitted by cuthbad on Mon, 2010-02-15 23:28
Hey all,
I've had my Penn 950ssm about 6 months and fished it pretty hard rigged with 40lb mono. Has served me well but recently the drag has started having problems. Under heavy drag pressure the spool lets out a few turns before seizing up momentarily then letting out a few more turns before seizing up again and so on. With light drag its smooth as but is now very jerky when under pressure. I have rinsed it thoroughly after every fish and left the drag loose when not in use.
Any ideas what is going wrong or what I can do to fix it?
Cheers,
Adam

Drag washers.
The HT100 drag washers often compress after a lot of use and the drag starts to slip, replace them as first measure.

Went around a couple of my local stores today but no one stocks the larger of the 2 washers. They offered to order it in but im after it sooner than that. Does oceanside have one in stock?
Thanks

Look at;
Not a common part to replace all the time so we dont stock either. Can get it in but i'd get someone (happy to help) to look at the reel and see whats going on before ordering parts.

drag
Hi There,
I dont know much about the ssm range, but i have a few of the ss reels (the older ones), and whilst it didnt happen to me, i know a few people who, when catching big fish (like rays) had actually managed to warp/bend the spool, from winding the line on with heavy drag - therefore meaning that the spool was not entirely circular anymore (only small warping but enough to make the difference) the effect was that the reel would occasionally catch when a fish was pulling line, or when you were reeling in under heavy drag - i dont know if this is the case here - but food for thought...
