Merc 115hp 4-stroke 2003
only done 230hrs though(didn't get much use in the first 5 years).
So far no problems with the motor itself. Only had an issue with some surface rust on the steering mechanism like this: http://fishwrecked.com/forum/rusting-outboard
Mine started to look like this with the bit of rust in 2009, but with just a spray of Lanotec on it after every wash for the last 5 years the rust hasn't advanced anymore. Should just get it replaced, but.....meh.
So would I buy a new Merc again, yep.
If I had all the money to buy any motor that I wanted, what would I buy? Yamaha.
on a genesis550. good motor - always started first time (even if it had sat for several weeks), economical and not so quiet that you didn't know it was running.
Have the same set up as Pauldarie, 115 4 stroke on a Genie 550. Great motor, 330 hours and never missed a beat. This motor is actually a yamaha as other motors are, johnson/suzuki ect. So whats on the cowling stikers is not always whats underneath. Its the holden ford argument but as stated most modern motors are fine if maintained correctly. If Im not mistaken the etecs had huge issues with the gear box's when they first came out but that has since been corrected and are now a good motor and well regarded. If you bought an earlier model you might not see it that way. I would buy another one without hesitation.
Hey Paul, yep loving the boat. Had some great trips out to direction bank and caught some nice fish. I couldnt be happier with the boat and it is a credit to you the way you looked after it. Yep of to Exy on monday for 3 weeks, yeehaa. Will send you some pics if we do any good. Any time you want a trip out mate just drop me a line, youre more than welcome anytime
Can't s speak from personal experience but my marine mechanic, has owned boat dealerships and is very knowledgable told me to stay away from verados when we imported from the usa which he said many of them have the same dramas, (can't remember exactly what). I have mates with them too and they seem to guzzle a fair bit more fuel than Honda, yammy and Suzuki. I'm sure there are plenty that don't miss a beat so this is just the opinion I have formed from over the years from speaking with people.
I have the new Merc 150 four stroke (not the Verado) and I am rapped with it so far. It's only about 4 months / 30 hours old but is better than I expected.
I have 2 boat's at present, both running verado's and i think they are great, I have had them on 4 boat's now and have only had one issue out of all of these and that was leaking oil cooler.
I do get great service from local boat mechanic - Matt Dyson Marine - so will keep using them. (been in town along time and he backs his product)
The power (love the supercharger), steering control's and Smart craft were the winner for me.

I have the 4.3MPI 300Hrs and great motor.
Most motors maintained from new should last well.
But have seen many older mercs with problems. Some people hate them, some people love them.

If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough
