Ray to Mulla ratio
Submitted by Karellean on Fri, 2010-12-17 17:57
I've been going mulla fishing probably once a fortnight over the last 2 summers for no success.
But....... the rays!
Been using strip baits, whole dead herring or yellowtail and livies if I can get them.
Tried the river, metro beaches and rockwalls and caught nothing but rays... LOTS of rays.
Sometimes 3 or 4 in a session
Just wondering if some of the experienced mulla fisho's could tell me how many rays you have to deal with before you can expect a mulla?
Also, weed report on s-bend/flatrock ?

Pm Replied... TY
Yep... Know all about the hours... Dont worry about that... its over the 300 hour mark at least.... I dare not mention the truer figure... women may complain. if they read over this...
Couple of likely takes, and dropped something fishy that was certainly not a ray at Brighton Beach the other week... Right on the High/Tide Sunset Convergance...
Damn rays though, at least the gear is proven... Some of them hauled up were NOT tiny...
Off to Dongara (and areas in 2WD) from Sun-Tue, in a bid to hopefully improve the odds... Was going to go south coast, but that looks nasty with 15-25 Knot winds...
Probably try Denison Marina Wall at night... Maybe further up at S-Bends during day...
Im quite used to treking a km with gear to get to secluded spots, only way you often find anything good... probably will find something up there...
Any weed report up that way lately ??

havent tried it myself, but
havent tried it myself, but have heard if using snelled hooks a little bit of foam in between them with the bait wrapped around that can keep it up off the bottom a bit and reduce the chances of rays picking it up by a little. Similar to the idea of a cork above the gang for tailor

Ask Mr Colin Hay about this
Ask Mr Colin Hay about this rig, he showed me a wicked one where the foam goes inside the squid, and then the hooks through the squid, penetrating the foam and out the other side of the squid, so the squid sits 50-60cm Up and floats around. I can't remember the exact way but it looked pretty damn good.

Would be keen to hear from Colin on this, gonna get into mulla fishing one of these days....

I can't view the picture but it definately was a South African variation. South Africans and their complicated rigs lol.

dirty water
I find rays don't like the sand stirred up water as much, still get some. But mulla's love it. Sting rays scavenge so where the most likely area where scraps get washed is where they hang. But do travel large distants to get to these area's. Try moving further up your gutter, where the water is moving out to sea. I find my good mulla ground has very few rays.

Yeh more recently have tried jammin foam/cork right down the gob of our dead baits... deep down the gob... And that has certainly reduced, though not stopped the rays.... As the bait is definatley off the bottom...
It starting to get a little stretched, but I got a theory the crabs still get on it.. and drag the damn bait down... And sooner or later when a ray comes along it kicks them off before taking the bait...
Its a little out there that one...
Thanks for the help all...
Perservance hopefully will prevail...
Booked in for Dongara next few days...

speak of the devil,
speak of the devil. was fishing with a mate tonight who had a live herring picked up by a ray. Would have been in the hundred kilo plus club cuz this guy has no probs with the metre and a half plus wing span rays but this one gave him an ass woopin lol. Just shows i guess, even off the bottom rays will get ya. Like i said though, probably helps getting it up off the sand and moving a bit.
Good luck in Dongara Karallean!
