Perth Skyshow 2015

 Hi All

Was on the east side of the Skyshow last night and got a few photo's.

It was a great evening with most of the boaters behaving themselves. (Until the retrieval and threats started..Lol)

Great pictures mate, always

Great pictures mate, always good the hear the vast majority of people behaving and not ruining it for others.

We did the fireworks down at Bathers Beach in Freo which ended up being a decent show and a nice easy one to get the kids and everyone in and out of without massive crowds

We were at the same end.

We were at the same end. Agreed it was a great show.  best of the last few years IMO.  just the one incident for us on the way there.  going past maylands yacht club at about 15 kts.  got passed by about an 8m centre console with twin 200's doing 25 kts +.  wouldn't have been a big issue had there been more than 2 - 3 metres between us.  I reckon I could have literally reached across and throttled him.  he slowed down a but after that and I had a very restrained piece of advice about overtaking clearances when we got alongside him after windan bridge.  I think his thumbs up was an acknowledgement that he passed way too close.

Good show

Randall, saw you go past me at the south eastern end of the anchoring area.

Was a good show and most of the other boats were well behaved, one dissapointing thing to happen was the amount of people who drove straight past a boat in distress (East Perth) which had an entire family in it. Ended up towing them home only to have another boat race in and refuse to give up ramp space when trying to bring them alongside.

That one thing aside it was a good day.

Saw you by chance

Tue, 2015-01-27 14:25

I was about 200m from where you went through and just happend to turn around at the right time, there was a a group of qunitrex's tied together with a bunch of guys and girls having a fat time next to us.....entertaining but not obnoxious.

We found the guy and his family bobbing around in the middle of the channel just past the Windan Bridge at about 9.55, not sure how long they were there for but I did see at least three boats in front of me go right past him (less than 10m) at about 15knots and give all onboard a good serve of wash, they looked bit shaken up.

There was a little agro at the Bayswater ramp (a few people got upset at a guy who was struggling to get his boat back on) but nothing too crazy, after getting the other boat into shallow water near the ramp I just hung out on the edge of the channel, stayed away from everyone and waited for a spot.

Thanks

I was taking the new X-mas pressie for for a trial. Had to go and buy it for myself on Sunday mind you..

Did a little bit of research on fireworks photography but most of it did not apply. No tripod, rocking boat and stacks of kids to mess up any trailing effects.

Also new camera, Canon, and i'm use to a Nikon so i found it pretty hard in the dark to work..lol

Skyshow

Tue, 2015-01-27 19:36

We were at Sth Perth, sterned up close to the beach.

No agro at all but plenty of entertainment.

Two 45 footers anchored 30 meters off the beach 20 meters apart. One crew seemed to get a bit pissed and disappeared below straight after the show.

At about 9.30 it swung easterly and the two boats started swinging and hitting.

After about an hour of them coming together with one crew fending them apart and banging on the deck they upped anchor and moved finally.

The other boat in the morning winches in his anchor (20 meters off a lee shore in a meter of water) then starts his engine after about 30 sec of jiggling controls by which time hes on the bottom.

20 minutes on the throttles and hes free and off!

Makes me realise how many guys with big boats just operate on a wing and a prayer

Sitting at Rotto now with a coldy and its all a distant memory

Thanks Fuzzy79 for the parking etc

What F stops and shutter speeds were you using there?

Some nice shots.

Camera settings

Tue, 2015-01-27 19:28

 Now that is complicated.

The photo's i put up range from f3.5-f5 and the shutter was 1/30-1/500 depending on the shot.

I tried to set up the camera in the daylight and use some fancy settings i saw on the net. Turn off auto focus, turn off image stabalisation,  manual focus, iso of 400, long shutter speeds, etc.  It was crap for sitting on the front of a small boat and all the first shots were ruined.

As i have said the camera is new so in the dark i went to shutter priority and flicked the auto focus back on. The owner of the boat i was on is a Pro photographer and he suggested i get the iso up a heap so went to 4000 and that helped a lot. Always helps to have a Pro around..lol

The shots were cropped a bit to remove most of the smoke and some of the brighter boat lights but anything i zoomed a bit on was way out of focus so the crappy lense that came with the camera will have to go. Just need to win the lotto to get the lens (lenses) i want.
