Oceanside Tackle and Marine 20% OFF SALE!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2006-05-13 11:29
Well winters hit and Adam Gallash reckons I've gotta look after his Fishwrecked customers so here goes!
I'm having a 1 week 20% OFF DISCOUNT on all gear in my shop, I stock a big range and would like members to take advantage of this one off sale. There are only a few exceptions like current "specials" and a few selected items which attract a 10% discount regardless.
Stock up now and SAVE $$$
Sale starts Monday 15th to Sunday 21st so no excuses!
I'll extend this to all Fishrecked.com members and FWA members as their site is down and most members bunny hop anyway!
Please tell staff that your here for the "Winter Sale" and that you've seen it on Fishrecked.com, FWA website members or "browsers" of these 2 websites qualify also.
Why wait!

Left hand lever drag
Ryan,
Your mission if you decide to accept it (mission impossible theme music in background)is to find a reasonable priced left hand lever drag in a size similar to a 321 Penn overhead. I would love one, but can't seem to find one. Looked at the Avets but they are a bit expensive.
Any suggestions? Next time I am down in freo I'll try and pop in, no doubt you will be out fishing though.
Cheers

Combo
Looks like i'll have to be in for my next combo soon. Plan on a 15-24kg live fibre stroker on a tyrnos 30 with 1km of 15kg as my trolling outfit for Exmouth. Might have to get some more divers and skirts as well, never know which one is going to be the most successful.

Hi Andy, Unfortunately there
Hi Andy,
Unfortunately there isn't much around at the lower $$$ value however I reckon the best pic IMO is converting a TLD15 to L/H which I can get Shimano to do for a small price :)
Call me or PM me for more info mate!

Lefthand lever drag
Right ho Andy Mac, you and I are from the same planet. I've never understood why everyone wants to spin lefthand and use a winch with their right, damned americian influence if you ask me. I'm a complete southpaw and have converted all my reels, even done Tiagra 50Ws and thats saying something.
For absolute ease and price the Penn GLS (old model) in size 25 or 45 can be converted without extra parts, its very easy to do and takes less than 3mins. Their bearings get a bit wonky if you always target big stuff (say 150lb+ for the 45sGLS) but there is a dodge that gives them an extra life. There are lots around cus the new models are in demand. New drags are cheap as are power handles and molded reel clamps which are must haves.
I've only studied the TLD design a little but they dont seem impossible. You cannot convert a Duel whatever the shops tell you, I know cus I'm taking them apart all the time to reset the drags. Seem to remember Accurate will make a lefty to special order, but how deep is your pocket? Everol also make lefty's without a huge premium on the price.
If you have your mind set on one reel in particular let me know and I'll have a look at one and see whats possible, I may even do it for you....hows that for an offer?
The absolute world expert on lefthand conversions is Cal Sheets in California USA, tho his specialality is Penn Internationals.
Keep you best arm on the rod thats what I say.

LH Wind
Spot on Mick, I've fished as a lefty all my life with spinning reels and couldn't believe the hassle trying to get an overhead with left hand wind when I started boat fishing out wide.
I have a couple of small left hand overheads Penn 321LH and an Okuma Convector, which cover 90% of my fishing needs, however getting a reasonably priced left hand lever drag for trolling has been very difficult. Until now I have been using a right hand wind lever drag, but that just feels too weird and I hate it. Hardly ever comes out on the boat with me unless it is as a spare.
I have seen the new Avet range and there are some nice lefties there that should be in my price range and small enough to fish all day. Interesting to hear that you have converted a few of your reels yourself, did you get some instructions off the net or did a tackle store give you a hand the first time you did it?
Thanks for the offer of a conversion, but I am still unsure if I would be better off just finding a lefty from the limited range out there and be done with it. Warranty issues etc.
Where are you located? Sounds like the States somewhere.
Cheers

Lefthand reels
Righto Andy Mac, heres the full m.o. Firstly I have no affiliation or connection to any company or business. I fish for sport and the pan, write fishing articles and when I cant fish no more, nail me down.
I'm based in south Portugal, a retired(@50) UK goverment employee. Studied engineering 'till I was 23 and never lost my feel for it. No one told me how to convert multiplying reels to leftys I just took one apart one day (an all steel Kalamazoo USA, which I think my father 'liberated' from Cookshaven in 1945), and went from there.
Long before the net (jez makes me sound ancient) I phoned and faxed the world over to every 'expert' I could get a handle on. I have boxes of correspondance to scan in my pc now I've broken my selfimpossed pc exile.
Because most anglers don't have a clue how to maintain a fishing reel I've always been in demand for service/repairs/advice (perhaps because I do it all for free?) and this has given me the opportunity to examine how each model is designed and built, and importantly if the can be, or are designed to be, converted to lefthand wind, as many are.
The best reels without question, designed to be either a left or right hand wind are the early model Diawa sealines, just takes a single screw remove and reposition to achieve. Its a star drag tho.
Penn specifically designed the 25&45GLS (single speed) reels to be left or righthanded, no problem with warranty (I'll give you a Penn centre who will do it if your concerned) they're almost bombproof, I've had mine, 2 each size since they came out 15+years ago and never had a squeak from them, 'xept for a new drag or two (@15bucks whos complaining) and some bearings (@beer money prices). The Penn Jigmaster 500 is a brill casting reel with 18-25lb mono, fit a rare earth magnet and it outfishes and importantly outlasts the more 'update' models from the jazzy designers (just needs abit of TLC to acheive) and it has a slug-it-out senator drag. Penn make dozens of leftys don't believe what the shops tell you they DO exist, believe me.
Shimano Tiagra 50Ws (and the 30s from what I can see) just need a reworked anti-reverse gear, I re-cut mine in 'reverse' with swiss files and an eyeglass, it took about 5hours (between eye rests) not as bad as it sounds and the result hasn't failed in 12years.
No one to my knowledge, has EVER given an ENGINEERING reason why 'overheads' have right hand winding handles, I think the old reel manufacturers just turned a Scarborough tunny rod/reel combo over and went from there.
Lastly, as you probobly realize the drag lever on all lefthand reels operates as all real-life hand-breaking systems do, that is you pull it towards you, oh so natural. Anyone know of a push hand-brake??
Just had a great 3hours jigging tuna, flat sea, big bait balls, what could be better? Had to stop, the wifes arms ached too much!

Re fresh!
Sorry guys for the delay, the shops keeping me flatout, so is my fishing days off also hehehe :)
Andy, the drag self tightens after fighting fish and is very jerky, they're suppose to be a dry drag and I've sold my reel off now and the new angler has used wet drag grease which has helped but sorry not good enough for me (bandaid IMO) The open drag washer & plate is a concern also, I wont stock them at this stage!
Mav, yeh I've ordered the Penn Torque, due late Oct/November at this stage, probably before X-mas at the worst.....saw them at the AFTA tackle show...NICE!!
Cheers

Avets
Andy
If you are in any ways interested in the laymans opinions on the avet read on....
I've gotta say that I've had no probs with my sx 5.1. as yet. I've had it almost a year and have severly neglected it. With no maintenance (I know this is bad and Gribbo can beat me up about this later) it has yet to miss a beat!! Best catch being a 20kg sambo off a 15 meter lump on 14lb.... It was not an easy fish to stop nor was my grin after the capture
Pound for pound I've not had a better overhead.. This avet combined with my live fibre 6 to 8kg overhead rod would have to be my favorite combo..
Cheers
