sweltering conditions on monday convinced me to head out to garden for a swim and abit of a squid session, after a nice swim and about 45mi of squiding we had 3 nice size squid in the tank, to my surprize a dolphin came along side the boat stuck is head out of the water looking for food i moved here from sydney about 10 months ago and this is not something that happens everyday so my wife, son and myself were very excited we hand fed the dolphin on fresh squid and fish for about 15min which is one of the most amazing things to happen to us on the water just wondering is this a common accurence in wa or we just lucky to find a friendly dolphin
cheers warren

There is a resident dolphin
There is a resident dolphin in the bay at Lancelin, I am told it is one of the ones released from that place up at two rocks when it closed. The dolphin gets pretty well fed by everyone, most taking out a few herring when checking the pots in case "squeaky" is about the place.

There are signs...
...at the Point Peron boat ramp (not sure about Woodies) saying not to feed the dolphins and other marine life. Don't know if it's actually illegal or not but the argument is that the dolphins become reliant on humans and their natural hunting skills erode. This practice also exposes them to food which may be of questionable quality...rotten bait, fish that has been frozen/refrozen, items not part of their normal diet and so on.
Then of course you can get morons (remember there is always one in every crowd) who might use the opportunity to try to harm the animal.
Anyway, didn't mean to rain on your parade and originally meant to PM you, wazza, but figured others on here might not be aware of the possible breach of the law so probably best to check with CALM or Fisheries to see if it IS a punishable offense.
We see a very friendly dolphin, a large female with a white mark on her chin, about half the times we boat in Cockburn Sound, but the kids understand when I tell them why we shouldn't feed her.

yep
there are a few dolphins that get around cockburn sound. I dont think I have seen a sign at Woodies ramp to be honest.
I know its probably not technically legal, but if I have someone on board who has never experienced a dolphion come up alongside your boat like that, I'll feed it a few fresh squid or herring I have caught. I dont feed it bait (I very rarely have any bait onboard anyway).

Feed me, feed me
A great experience for the family wazza....but save the squid for the plate next time as they are very nice.
The dolphins are an awesome animal and it is very tempting to pat and feed them, but I don't allow it on my boat either. Pics and a swim are best and just as enjoyable and memorable.

yeah as of late have seen
yeah as of late have seen huge numbers of them just short of the carnac GI crossing, they love playing and love swimming in the wake of the boats. Fun watching 7 or 8 of them trying to fit onto your bow wave.

good to hear that there are
good to hear that there are more around and something like that should be great we never ment any harm to the dolphin and anyone who would deserves the worst but you people here in wa should feel privlidged to be able to experience something like that coming from over east you'll never get the chance to do that over there
