How to fight fish that jump out of the water

Hi guys,

tried searching for some advice with little luck - so apologies if it has been covered already. What's the go when you are fighting fish that like a bit of aerial acrobatics to prevent them throwing the hooks? Is it better to give it line or loosen up on the drag or just keep it tight? Also does the same info apply to all fish ie same technique on chopper tailor as mahi mahi..

Thanks in advance!!!

im sure other people have better advice, but heres my take. When the fish is gonna jump, keep the line tight and the rod tip as low to the water as you can. This should stop too much mid air head shaking and less chance of the hooks coming loose.

Cheers,
Adam

As above. With Queenies I keep the tip low and even in the water. That way they dont feel us much upward force and dont jump as much. If you want them to jump for a little fun, lift the rod tip way up, as this way they feel pressure forcing them up and they jump. Same goes for barra, sials, marlin etc.

When they do jump, keep tension on the line, as line slackness is the cause for the hooks to dislodge.

Hezza go balastic no matter what you do, with them a wide gape hook seem a good option, as they dislodge this with more difficulty. I dont know if others have found this, but with herring they jump no matter what you do.

near the boat and around the anchor, dont be afraid to try and follow it around the anchor rope while its jumping around, pulling line and consequently snap the tip of your rod on the anchor rope to make it a bit harder to land the fish.

Worked a treat for me........

If nothing else, it gave PilbaraBrad a good belly laugh - for the next 20 minutes.

Queenies can be killer fish. Had one change direction suddenly, came straight for the boat, jumped clean over the transom, and hit the Mrs in the back of the head almost knocking her into the water. Was a simple landing after that, still very green and flapping in the boat like mad. I think she wanted to cook it for revenge but released "accidentally". Heres the little athlete.

Nice work! At least you landed the bugger.

Flying queenie into the back sounds pretty dangerous though!!

I can tell you the Mrs was spewing mad

Initially blamed me for hitting her in the head with a few choice words, then she realised it was the little queeny. It came right out of the water at me, and I saw it and ducked, but she wasnt that lucky.

She would never kill a queenie, but the look at it would have frozen over all of the Burrup. I accidentally dropped it back over because I am sure she was going to eat it. We already had some MJacks on board and why kill a fish.

Its was a very LOL moment.

Bit different from the beach

Bit different from the beach - how about an aerial salmon on a 12ft beach rod?  Can't imagine keeping the tip down for that.  I just try to keep as much tension on the line as possible and try to keep the rod horizontal, but hey, if it needs high-sticking, so be it! lol
