Yes, another one, that's 2 in 3 weeks in WA plus another in Cairns.

Condolences to family and friends.

On another note a couple of mates where in Shark Bay last week and said that a fisho fell from the cliffs at Steep Point last week and has not been found. I've not seen anything in the media at all, has anyone heard anything ?

 Very sad about the latest

Very sad about the latest shark attack victim. No one deserves that to happen but I think the danger of spearfishing is becoming too great in the southern part of our state. There have been a number of very near misses involving divers too. Each to their own but I know a lot of people that have given it away because of the danger from GW's.

I heard about the missing guy on the news but haven't heard anything since then.

Steep

Tue, 2026-06-09 12:29

Was in Denham last week and spoke to the sea rescue guys. They had been out from till midnight forst night and all day the day after with 2 boats and a plane and no sign of the bloke.

He evidently hooked a fish from the cliff and then climbed down to retrieve it and was watched off the rocks. Very sad but also a very poor decision to climb down and out yourself in harms way. Feel for his family.

Still looking for the Steep

Still looking for the Steep fisho I believe...be lucky to find the body at a guess which is the saddest part.

RIP to the diver, spear fishing certain times of the year and locations does increase the risk. I do very little spearing, even less so now due to the restrictions of Perth.

Its something we all accept when ever we enter the water, I'd rather go out doing something I love than to die an old man in pain, halve cripple, deaf and riddled with cancer.

Fair enough Brock. It's a person's decision to enter the water and as you said, spearing in certain locations and times of the year increases the risk. People say we need to do more to mitigate the risks but how do you do that on a broad scale without culling GW's, which will never happen. I think the best mitigation is on the individual level. Location, timing, wearing a catch bag all come into it. Then looking at historical patterns and tagged sharks setting off receivers could be a big help.

I think there are too many sharks around these days generally and something should be done about that. As far as Great Whites go, more effort to tag as many as possible and then make people more aware of the mnonitoring outcomes would help. They can't tag them all but the more they do, the more data we'll have and the better their movements will be known (and hopefully predicted).
