Yeah I went up Webby, managed to maintain the Barra hoodu. I think the last 4 trips for me have drawn blanks - mind you, that's 4 trips in 2 seasons. I haven't put in a great deal of effort for barra in recent times.
Live baiting was very uneventful, crazy slow infact, without so much as a sniff on baits at all. Switched to lures late into the arvo on Saturday, bamo, instant success on poppers but couldn't stay connected.
On they Sunday morning decided to ditch the bait and just fish with lures, mainly plastics and poppers/fizzers. Beached the boat and had a fairly consistent session casting from the bank. Probably saw at least 15 barra, around 8 of which managed to find the hooks but only managed to stay connected to one fish before heading back home.
It seems the barra were actively feeding but not really striking aggressively - quite lazy. A few fish were seen to follow the lure all the way in without striking and then back pedal right at our feet. Water temp was right up there - 31.5 degrees. I assume most fish were hooked lightly on the outside of the mouth and all it took was one head-shake or jump to dislodge the hooks.
Yep, he puts in long hours and gets rewarded, its certainly not easy fishing thats for sure! Having to sit in a stinking hot creek with no wind, bushflies and sandflies annoying the piss outta you, carrying a 20l bucket of livies through knee deep mud only to have the barra not hungry and then the worst thing of all is having to deal with B-rad's singing of kiddy songs which are played on repeat. Nice junior mate, hope you crack the half ton soon.
his farts were deadly stinky. And they had a tendency to waft and hang, even with a breeze about.
And for the hours and effort, 50 is probably being under-rewarded. Brad could easily be in the 100's, but you do tend to lose as many (or even more) as you catch - even with sharpened owner hooks! But thats barra fishing as I found out.
