Another box ticked
Last night I went out for my first night fish over here in Pohnpei. I went out about 5pm with a couple of the local boys and tied up to a mooring over a reef near the harbour entrance after spending about 30 minutes throwing poppers for GTs (no luck though). The water was only about 30 metres deep and it had been a full moon the night before so the local boys were talking it up. Stayed at the first spot for a couple of hours, knocked over a few beers and relaxed, but didn't catch anything to brag about. We then changed position to a spot about 400 metres away and dropped the anchor. After about 30 minutes my rod loaded up and I was on. I was using my little Silstar Crystal Tip (6-10kg) rod and a Penn International 975LD so my biggest fear was hooking a GT or a Dogtooth Tuna that are often caught in the area. I could feel the line being dragged about through the coral and thought that it was only a matter of time before the only decent fish of the night was lost. But a little bit of extra drag was applied (always scares me doing that) and I finally turned it's head up and up it came, taking the occasional run back down to keep the adrenalin going. Cheers all round when a 5kg two-spot red snapper hit the surface. Looks very much like a Red Bass or even a Mangrove Jack. An absolutely awesome fight on the light gear. Another great Pohnpei experience. I may not want to leave this place and come back to WA when my time is up.

Next
Cheers Paul. The winds are definately dying down so I'll be into popping for GTs and Grouper (Pohnpein Coral Trout) and jigging for Jobfish over the next three months or so.

Coming Home
Funny you say that Alfred. I'm enjoying it over here no doubt. But I'm missing the fishing in WA a lot and also all of the family and friends. I'll be ready to come home at the end of our three year stint.

Taste
I've been told that they can be a little tough. I'm having one of the fillets tonight. I'll let you know.

Taste Feedback
I cut a fillet up into nugget size pieces, soaked them in sweet chilli sauce and covered them in breadcrumbs (ala PeteD). Then cooked then in the frying pan in some vege oil. Beautiful. I'd heard a lot of bad reports about Red Bass but I certainly didn't find anything to complain about.
