If i wanted any four stroke i would go for the 3 brands you listed but im getting around 4.2 m and i want an engine thats light but i wont go for a suzuki 2 stroke because i think there bad engines because all suzuki does is consentrate on there 4 strokes there for not putting to much effort into there two strokes. I am considing a yamaha though. But when i was younger we had a 30hp mariner and we would run it full throttle every second it was running and its still going strong.
a work mate had a 30hp Tohatsu on his 4.2m tinny and had no probs and got 30kt plus from it. Another had a 30hp yammy on the same boat and it was plenty of horse and never missed a beat. Have you priced a E-Tec?
I have heard very big problems with etec outboards that include oil injection clogs and failures and replacement of heads on these motors and other problems. if you check out and compare a 30hp etec to a 30hp honda (4 stroke) you will notice that they are the same weight. and about the same price. Around 4 to 7 grand
David i have had 30hp and 40hp CV model yammys up until recently. After 4yrs they never missed a beat, had plenty of power and were good on fuel. CV models are pretty basic and you have to mix the fuel. Both were mounted on a 4.2m stacer.
Ive heard good things about yamms but i also heard because of there great performance and reliability they also come with a great price tag. What did you pay for your 30hp?
from memory about $2500 but that was a good deal in 2002. Yammy used to have prices on their website. CV was the model and it means customer value...so no frills there. It was electric start but i upgraded to the 40hp because it had power trim and tilt as well as a bit more power.
I've had two mercury 25's(2 strokes(1 stolen)) on a 4.2m tinnyy and i can not fault them, mate has got the mercury 30hp(2 stroke) on 4.2m tinny and i currently have a 50 hp mercury 4 stroke on my trailcraft profish 465. I would honestly say that out of those three motors the 25hp was the pick of the bunch, It has a better electrical system than the 30hp, the throttle and gear control being on the tiller arm makes driving the boat so much easier for the skipper and the 50 hp is quite frankly gutless as (top speed 22 knots). Performance wise the 25hp shat over my mates 30hp, on dead calm seas i could do 29-30knots and thats moving in a little tinny. If you are going to go or thinking of going four stroke go the yamaha mate, my other boat has a 225 yamaha on it and the reliability, power and fuel economy i get from the yamaha, i don't think can be beaten.
If im going to look a yamm i only can go 2 stroke because their 30hp 4 stroke is 94kg i might as well be looking at a 50hp two stroke. but maybe a bf 30 honda because or even a 25 yamm or honda because the 25 and 30 's 4 strokes have 3 cylinders providing more power and torque than a 30 two stroke or 25 two stroke.
If you can do it, test out a 25hp mercury, even though there only two cylinders the later model engine development is a much better option over some of the 2 and 3 cylinder out dated engines and if it is your first boat the tiller arm with throttle and gearbox control is a really good and safe idea.
I think my old one was close to 60/65kg, definately not to heavy as i use take it off the boat myself.
gday I have a 2006 15hp mariner which is actually a rebadged 18hp tohatsu and its a great motor. I used it on my quintrex 375 dart when I travelled round oz and with 2 people and an esky in the boat could get 20 knots.
The only problem is being a 2 stroke it runs a bit rough at idle it wants revs and needs to be going about 6 knots to start running smooth which is a bit quick trolling round for barra and stuff sometimes.
The 15hp mariner with the gears on the tiller are US made and the ones with the gear leaver on the cowling like mine are the Jap made rebadged 18hp tohatsus, they are a few kg's heavier and have a slightly longer leg, 5 inches from memory, which suited my tinny.
Id buy another one without hesitation, I wanted a yammy originally but they were $2750 and i paid $2100 for mine in may 2007. Hope that helps a bit
currently looking at the same. i'll prob go the yammie for piece of mind, my 5m boat runs a 70 yam 2st and best motor for reliaiblilty i've owned, etecs i looked at and got quoted 5700 for a 25hp, good thing with the mariners and mercurys is u can get the model with the gear selection on the tiller which no other brands do it was a big draw card for me, but prob still go the yammie in my case, a few bucks extra tho, i know the yammie will still be going in 15 years if i ever keep it that long
after doing extensive research on different outboards i read about problems with yamaha 100:1 premix which include scratching, sticking, less lubrication and decreased engine life but also if using 50:1 you will eliminate the problems and increase longevity and reliability but fowle plugs
If you owned a yamaha 2 stroke could you tell me what ratio of oil you used and how it ran.
have a 40 hp yammie 2 stroke for a couple of years now and mix the fuel 50:1 and have never had any problems with the motor. would never buy a different brand motor ever again.

Any reason why ???
Any reason why mariner, mercury and tohatsu stand out for you ???
If i was buying a new engine i wouldnt look at any of them.
Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda are the leaders in the field for good reason.

Wont help
An extra cylinder does not provide a greater output or top speed they provide smoother power and more tourque
