Fishing Ban

 G'day all

Heard from a pretty reliable source that if Labor get back in at this this election, they are going to put a 2 year Demersal ban in place. They are trying to keep it under wraps as they don't want it to affect their campaign. I really hope this isn't the case! Has anyone else heard about this?

Someone literally asked the fisheries ministers office and they said they're not even considering it. Straight from the horses mouth, not some "anonymous source". Someone just made it up as a smear, knowing certain sorts will just lap it up.

Though you'll never convince anyone who has already made their mind up for other reasons....

Never trust labour dont believe what they say prior to an election ,they are intoxicated with greenie ideas and will do anything to muck up lives. Just look at the expansion if no take areas and the extension park areas ,they are not a friend of fishermen

They are no fan of most outdoor pursuits e.g. 4wdriving, fishing, camping, rec shooting. Hence they don't manage things, they just put a padlock on.

In their ideal world, we all sit at home and watch nature on our screens.

It's a pity that neither of the 2 parties that you would assume are going to lead have no interest in even mentioning anything about the fishing or hunting or locking out of areas leading up to this election so far.

Fishing election commitments

Tue, 2025-02-18 19:31

"Fishing licence reform: On the weekend, WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam pledged to replace the current six fishing licences (costing up to $290) with a single, simplified “covers-all” licence costing $40. This policy also committed to ensuring that important programs currently funded using fishing licence revenue, such as FADs, RFIF, and community grant programs, will be protected."

Just one of a few election commitments mentioned in a recent Recfishwest article.

 Should note that Liberal

Wed, 2025-02-19 12:53

Should note that Liberal would be very unlikely to get in without a National coalition, and Nationals have strongly indicated support for all the issues noted above.

In fact (rather foolishly I thought) they have already indicated they wouldnt join Liberals UNLESS they supported moderating the firearm legislation.
In our seat of Midwest/Geraldton, its Nationals and an independant thatll be up the top, Labor at the bottom for me.

Important to also note that in the Lower House (MLA) now, you MUST selct your own preferences by numbering every box.
If you don't, it goes in the bin.

Liberals Firearms stance

Wed, 2025-02-19 16:04

Rob I have an email from Hon. Nick Goiran MLC which among other things states:

"... If I am re-elected at the State Election, once the new upper house begins, I will once again move for the Firearms Act to be reviewed by Parliament’s specialist legislation committee so it can take evidence in public hearings from impacted firearm owners and make recommendations to sort Labor’s shambolic mess out;

The official position of the Liberal Party is to support my motion ... "

My personal belief is that a Liberal / Nats coalition is unlikely to get over the line in 2025. They will make gains but Labor will be returned for a further term. Hopefully there will be sufficient gains to keep the bastards honest and accountable and limit the total arrogance Labor has shown since the last election.

Yes Alan, thats my prediction as well.
Ive been receiving the Goiran emails as well, however I'm led to believe that Libby Mettam actually voted for the legislation?

May not be true but there doesnt seem to be a good concensus across the Liberals.
Its going to be interesting times but what riles me is how many people actually have no fkn idea about it all.

I had a mate contact me about something Id posted and said our EBA and Fairwork were much better and he'd be voting WA Labor.

Seriously mate, WA Labor has absolutely nothing to do with our Fairwork registered EBA.
I explained that but he kept coming back to "yeah but Fairwork is much better under Labor".

Then theres the preferences-not many are aware that in the Lower House now only YOU can direct your preferences.

If you don't number all boxes, its in the bin.

I have heard the rumour of a 2 year demersal ban but it was just that - a rumour. Probably just misinformation as noted above but I don't trust politicians and Don Punch in particular. I think he probably believes what he spruiks but isn't smart enough to cut through to the truth.

Tue, 2025-02-18 19:03

Then someone on Farcebook said it was definitelty going to a tag system. When I asked how they knew " Oh from someone high up in fisheries" LOL I'm sure they'd be coughing up that infoto someone sothey can just paste it on FB.

All BS imo. Unless they have utter proof like thye did in SA then it won't happen.

The only thing that does need to happen is the Greens to fuck off and be voted out. Too much sway atm.

Not sure about a 2 yr ban, I

Wed, 2025-02-19 10:27

Not sure about a 2 yr ban, I don't believe that'd fly regardless.

BUT, I'm quite convinced that if Labor manage to get back in strongly, the following will be coming at us;

  • extensive new marine parks Perth and north
  • Closed beaches for 4wd/dogs as they tried for South Coast
  • Abrolhos, more restrictions on all line fishing rec and commercial, quite possibly a ban altogether. Not crays, too big and too established
This came to me during a discussion with a local older FO, and wouldn't be from DPIRD but from DBCA who are the main Department at the Abrolhos Park.

Need to remember that DBCA have no remit to promote or protect fishing
