Tailor at North Mole
Hey Guys,
So i went to North Mole lastnight 22nd Jan, as we drove in we saw the fisheries there it was about 1 hour before sunset, and that made me smile! i was very glad that they came down to north mole, alot of funny business happines there ( with undersized fish that is)
We decided to fish in a diff spot this time, i rigged up a paternoster on my 10ft with a whole mullet on, cast that out, dint take long till i got snagged, while trying unsnag my rig, the fisheries came to ask us some questions, caught anyting? what type of fish you targeting etc? nice guy i must say, the other guy was chattin to people further down. by this time i was fed up with the 10ft haha , i left it with some line out, managed to take it out eventually, rigged up my 6ft 7 rod ...with a float and about 1 metre + leader with gang hooks for sardines.
Nothing really hapened till about 30 to 45 after sunset, caught about 9 or so tailor 2 of which looked around the 28cm mark but dint get to messure, they decided to un hook themselves and jump back in the water, the rest where around the 25 cm mark no keepers unfortunatly :( used blue sardines, baby and big mullies. tailor have some seriouse teeth, i now coz the one bugga bit me! quater of my finger in his mouth, haha finger wouldnt stop bleeding ( i cant imagine the bigger tailor!), not only that it then bit my tshirt and wouldnt let go, that made 2 of the hook go straight through my tshirt by this time my dad is killed laughing, managed to unhook the fish before it caused any more trouble and took me fair while to take out the other hooks!
About 1 hour 30min +- after dark the fisheries came back, same fella came to ask if we have caught anything etc. as for the guy fishing furhter down on my right, i think he got hammered, saw the other fisheries guy goign through his bucket and stuff, writting out a warning or fine.
just before we left, i caught what i think is a snook, i rather get bitten by a small tailor then that bloody thing, the teeth on them are some seriouse stuff, looks like from the barracouta or barracuda family, i dint have my camera with me so no pics sorry guys. Are snook any good to eat? When would be the best time, rig and bait to use to catch snook? Everyone seemed to be catching undersized tailor and surprisingly there where no bull herring at all.
We left shortly after which was about 10:15pm it was a good night out , just no keepers but thats ok atleast we caught something.
Cheers for reading

G'day Ish, You gotta watch
G'day Ish,
You gotta watch those chopper tailor teeth mate. That's why their called choppers. Your snook aren't really good for eating mate, but they do make good bait. I use whole livies for Sambo bait. cut into cubes works well also.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day working!

Be careful
doing that mate, being undersize you have to release it. Not chuck a hook in its back

I meant
Tailor mate, regardless of what species it is it's illegal to use undersize fish as bait. But you certainly wont be the first person to do it, just don't let fisheries see you
.

They are quite regular there.
They are quite regular there. And it seems to me, that they are biting bit closer to the rocks than tailors.

they are
they are very close to the rocks, they bite a bit like whiting, like soft nibbles.
yeh the tailor are litle further out, although the small ones are litle bit closer.

did you use a float all
did you use a float all night? A much better rig for tailor and snook is a small running sinker onto gang hooks.. Cast it out, let it sink for 5-10 secs, then start reeling in slowly

yeh
yeh i did, my leader from the float was like 1.4m, what i did was cast it and left it, and reeled in a little and left it, keeping the line tight. ill try that next time

It depends on how strong the
It depends on how strong the current is. If it is strong I use a running sinker on a set of 3/0 gangs.
If its not I just use unweighted mullies on a set of gangs. Try and get a spot close to the light house, that is where all the big tailor are!

yep how much weight you use
yep how much weight you use as a sinker all comes down to wind strength and direction, current, bait size and even what type of rod you use to cast your bait out, and where the fish are feeding of course!

we where gona fish just before the tip by the lighthouse, but we ended up fishing just before the lighthouse. yeh when i get there ill rig up, see what the wind and current is like.
i dont get much distance, i only have a 7ft rod medium action . i might use my 10ft next time.
which side of the lighthouse? if its sw or se...do i go on the right or left side?
cheers guys

snook are good eating
about snook, they are pretty good eating but they have to be a decent size to keep, like most fish i catch if they are not big enough to fillet i throw em back, fish like herring, skippy, bream and snook are great eating but the trick is to skin em and eat them fresh on same day and i guarantee theyll taste great, just other day i caught some nice 30cm silver bream, skinned and filleted they tasted awesome, snook are the same

I've heard of a few people
I've heard of a few people eating them.
Never tried them myself, a mate of mine cooked one up the last time we caught one and reckons it was suprisingly good.

Me and mate were out
Me and mate were out chasing some squid down south when we started hooking into some snook around the 60cm + size on a baited rig we had out just for the sake of anything swimming past. took a couple home to try filletted them up and a light batter shallow fried and they were really nice. id keep them for sure if i caught a couple.
Plus at that size they were a lot of fun on light gear, we would have got a least a dozen at that size.
Still trying to catch fish!

Yeah been catching a heap of snook lately at the mole they have to be 30cm aswel same as tailor
but all i use is a small set of gangs with a glow stick just before and whitebait or anchovies for bait works
really well for me i catch more snook than tailor there actually now
to fish or not to fish is that even an option?
