Hey Matt, hows it

Hey Matt, hows it going......$1000 is right in middle ground....wont get ya the top shelf stuff but will be pretty good.

Are you sure you will do much in the 400's.......we did a bit of jigging in 250m up at Jurien earlier this month and I have no penchant for doing it again.......just hard work and a lot of winding......120m is enough for me, as most of the fun is in the strike....not cranking up 390m of line and 20 kg of limp fish.

For 400m bottom bouncing, I would strongly recommend an electric but think this is well outside your price range and no good for jigging......Chrisp used a Saltiga overhead at Jurien and it seemed OK....I used a Stella 20,000 (which will blow your budget unless you literally use a broomstick for a rod) and did not have much fun to be honest, and 400m would require PE5 on a 20,000....

I think a strong overhead would be the go........plenty of options but have you thought about one of the bigger Shimano OceaJiggers.....absolute ducks guts for jigging (I have the 1500 size for PE3 stuff.....awsome reel but only JDM spec....) and the larger ones would be sweet for heavier line classed for jigging and would bottom bash as well as they have heaps of cranking power....

But maybe a 2 speed may be the go? Others will know better.

John

Cheers john, wont be doing alot of fishing at that depth but it could always be used for shallower bottom bouncing trolling ect so i just want the line capacity there for the days i can get out that far. havent really had much to do with the oceanjigger might check them out, i had a look at the saltiga 50 today and it seemed good, any recomendations for rods to suit that reel?

Might have to pop into oceanside and check that jm out also.

cheers Matt

No point expecting to use the same outfit for trolling ... trolling 80lb braid?

I'm using an Accurate BX600 with 600m of PE6/80lb on it, with a Synit DeepShot Seriola Pro and its a good combo. I'm thinking of filling up my other BX600N with PE5/70lb to get the line down a bit easier on those days with the heavy currents.

I have always used my b/b rod and reel for trolling with 10 or so meters of lighter mono leader and it does the job, i dont do enough of it to justify having a dedicated set up, basically im just after a good rod and reel to handle 600m or so of varivas pe5, i wouldnt imagine the 30vsx would be any good for jigging?

For trolling, you can always

For trolling, you can always use something cheap like a TLD.

The Penn reels are nice, but jigging with a 16VSX? No thank you!

I have these figures for the Accurate reels;

  • 600: 576m of 65lb, 375m of 80lb
  • 600N: 457m of 65lb, 297m of 80lb*
  • 600NN: 274m of 65lb, 178m of 80lb*

* Extrapolated from other values

I actually got 600m of PE6/80lb onto the BX600 and 350m of PE8/100lb onto the BX600N, but I reckon I'll get damn close to 600m of PE5/70lb onto the BX600N when I get a spool of that in to try. The benchmarking for the Daiwa Saltiga Boat Braid has been so good I really don't expect the PE5 to break under 80lb, the PE4/55lb is breaking @ 68lb.

the other rod that is perfect

the other rod that is perfect for this is the smiths Marianna if you can find one, made for really deep jigging. I use a SOM 120 with a SMiths WGJ EX and find it excellent in 250-300m. As till said I think PE4-5 is probably smarter as heavier line makes it harder to get down.

Can't really comment on the smith, never used one myself 500g is a big ask for a PE4 rod though!

The Accurate BX600 is too big a reel for PE5 and the Smith. I have 600m of PE6/80lb Daiwa Saltiga Boat Braid on mine.

Remember luke used to use his smith mariana 200 with a SOM L50 which only weighs 480g, the BX600 weighs 740g, even the BX600N is 680g.
