Soft Plastic rods, no more than 8kg?
Submitted by till on Wed, 2008-11-26 10:23
Hi,
not in any particular hurry, but sometime I was thinking of getting a lighter rod for spin, for SPs and a bit of lure chucking. The dropshots have a good rep, but they're alconite guides, whats the next up from there?
I'd probably look to combine it with a stradic 2500 or sol 2500 or the like, any tips appreciated.
Ta,
till

The Dropshots are very good Till
I run mine with a Stradic 2500 and have no complaints.

The Shimano Starlo Stix Tournament Pro range might be what your looking for. They have a light spin, med spin and max spin.
Colin,
Do you know where i could have a look at the entire range of dropshots online? Looking at gettin 1 to match up with 3000-4000 reel.
Cheers

Assuming around 6-7'?
As WODF said, probably look at the starlo's, or perhaps even the t-curves. Otherwise, head to a couple of tackle shops with forrests of rods to get an idea. Looking online only you might find rods online you cant get in the shops and vice versa (though, campbells have a lot of rods on their site, bluewater has a reasonable amount, but a lot more rods in store).
Very happy with my sol :D

Favourite would be the top
Favourite would be the top line Pflueger. Mate has one with a certate custom 2500 with 15lb braid and that is a great outfit. I had a look at the Saltiga casting one in Bluewater yesterday and it looked perfect as well, rated PE3. I personally use a Loomis GL3 with Branzino and it is nice and soft but I prefer the Pflueger. Loomis has landed my best fish though 38lb Sambo on a snapback. ALso handled a 21 lb Queenie in Exmouth this year.

Hmm same problem I have with the nitros, how can anyone charge $300 for a rod that has alconite guides?

Possibly if they put the
Possibly if they put the money into the blank instead of the guides. Its not like alconites are bad or anything. Rods that tend to have better guides tend to be built better and better blank action (as well as the guides not interfering with the shape much or adding much weight).
Know what you want to spend and pick the best rod for the money. I'd rather go with a better feel rod with alconites than a worse one with SiC's. Though in general, theres a correlation.
Also, if one piece is fine, have a look at the daiwa saltwaters.

outfit
depends on buget really but here are a few suggestions:
penn pinpoint
shimano raider up through the $$ ranks
dropshots
i would stick clear of strudwick (IMO)
personally for value for money i would go dropshots/raider, good price and easy to upgrade from once you are comfortable

The dropshots are popular but those starlo stix tournament pros are pretty well priced, from $165.
