Freediving has been around a lot longer than scuba and bait has been around a lot lot longer than artificials. So that would make bait fishing more pure than fishing with lures hey.
Used too spear with gidgies on scuba when I was a young man lol. Mate had a shack at Leeman and the diving was awesome. Lots of Dhuies and Harlequin fish. Acceptable as Till said as long as it's legal.
Its all good as far as im concerned either way but is defenatly more rewarding when you get them free diving. But remember the key rule if you dont know what it is and are not going to eat it dont shoot it!!!!
i think you'll find the freediving/spearing comunity definately frown upon spearing on tanks, but it is perfectly legal. somewhat less of a challenge, and also definately more stuffing around than doing it freediving, but there is nothing in the rule book that says you cant.
i personally find it too much of a chore to do it (on tanks), and therefore havent done it for years. there are a HEAP of fish that benefit from that decision hahah!! its a much easier process to do it freediving, you just have to get your lung capacity up, so you can do deeper, longer dives. it is actually realy good fitness too.
definately 100% back up what man overboard said about leavingt the blue groper alone.
So i went out with that as my mission.I went a couple of times and finally found one swam above it for a little bit before going down when i got down i found he had a female with him and couldnt bring myself to do it.To all the folks out they that think spearfishing should be banned think of it this way.If you go out bottom bashing you have no choice in what you catch. The only choices you have is what to keep or release and when to stop fishing(this is the one that most have the trouble with ie we have caught 6 undersize dhu of this spot in 60 meters there must be a bigger one down there WRONG)When diving you are there in the moment and can take the fish that is the right size and species that you are targeting. In all the years i have been diving the only thing that was undersize that has been effected by the half a dozen or so guys i go with was a cacker cray that picked a occy pot to hide in and unfortunately coped a gidgy for the mistake.
I find it far easier to freedive than spear on tanks. That and you see far more fish if you dont have bubbles radiating out of your head. The other thing that i hope doesnt happen is that sharks figure out we are a food source and then all the bubbles will do is act as a sign post for an easy meal. They have been around for millions of years and fead the same all that time.We have been around such a short time and it has only been since the invention of scuba, that those of us that cant be bothered with getting fit a freediving, have entered their domain.

Obviously not for purists,
Obviously not for purists, but then some people fish bait too.
Most people do what they like, and as long as its legal, I'm pretty happy to leave them to it.

It is perfectly legal in this
It is perfectly legal in this state, as Till said, perfectly acceptable. Not everyone likes going the bubble.
But please leave the Blue Groper alone ..
After a while a lot of guys take up free diving for the challenge,
All good in my books

Not for me. Spearing is on
Not for me. Spearing is on breath hold only which is getting shallower and shallower the more unfit I become.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
