Shark Chumming Q&A......

Hey guys, im hoping to go out for dive out on the edge of the continental shelf......

I'm planning to take about 20kg or fish heads and mullies and 10lt of burley oil and hopefully get some nice pics of a bull, tiger or hammerhead.......

Has anyone tried this around perth? I've done it a few times in South africa and had tigers bulls and hammerheads come in.

Does anyone know if the fisheries or water police would have any drama's with this sort of action?

And I guess finally, If anyone thinks this sounds like fun and has access to a boat somewhere near joondalup i recon "Direction Bank" would be a cool place to try, It's about 18mile off shore.

yeah man but dont bother with going out there, u get all those sharks at the back of the five fathom bank. lots of bronzies though and then u got a chance for a white too. ou on the shelf u get blues and hammers and makos mainly, try the fads, they hold oceanic white tips and other random sharks too

Ive done dozens of FADs trips and never seen a shark there. Save your fuel and stick to 5FB, or the barges!

I'm not too sure of the legalities but

Got a pair of mates, one has built an ally shark cage and they are planning a similar trip but also to catch and satellite tag a great white or two, I know these tags aren't cheap as I've offered to donate some money to the cause and decky while doing it, maybe if you want to cough up some $$$$$ towards a satelite tag they might let you in on it too...all early days and it's their show so I'm just sitting back letting them do the research about legalities / permits etc but if your keen I'll let them know :-)

Hey guys, yeh i'm serious!

Thu, 2012-01-05 19:47

Yeh, i've been checking out the sea charts and looks like the direction Bank off of joondalup come up to about 30-40m  about 18mile out. Hang the chum bucket at about 16m, go against the current for a mile of so then let the bucket drift, when ya see fins, jump in and snap a few nice pic's.

What i'm lacking at the moment is a boat in that area. If anyone is keen i can sort out all fuel cost's. I have the Chum Bucket made and waiting. Looks like I might be heading off Mandurah on the 14th so i'll let u know how that goes..... if anyone's keen i'd love to meet and explain the whole senario, and show ya some pic's i already have........(just to prove i'm not insane!!)

Kane that sounds awsome, i'm not to keen on cages though...... but tagging whites sounds very cool. I live in Indonesia for most of the year and am only around till the end of March, but if its happening before then, let me know and i'm pretty sure i can come up with some coin to help the cause!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Hope this pans out. Would love to see some pics of some local noahs. But be wary of the Whites they're more than friendly lately.

What do i think, CRAZY. If it

Sat, 2012-01-07 09:24

What do i think, CRAZY. If it floats your boat though as Till says, you dont need to go much further than the five. I dont know what its like up north but try the local cray boats. I know the ones down here often have large numbers of sharks following them picking up the old baits daily. Not much different than what your planning. I see hammers, bronzies and makos normally around my area when Im diving. Id be looking for a good bright day with excellent visibillity and would definately need to see the bottom in 25 -30 m from the surface if I was giving it a go.
