Propylene Glycol
Submitted by bsir on Fri, 2015-07-31 17:45
I need to buy some propylene glycol to install an M260 transducer. I was going to use a coolant, but everything seems to be ethylene glycol which isnt real good to use.
The last place i phoned wanted a doctors script.
Anyone know where i can buy some at a reasonable price?
I only need about 2 liters worth.
Thanks

Seems a waste of money if you ask me ,
distilled water with a splash of food colouring to check for leaks works fine

I just used ethylene Glycol,
I just used ethylene Glycol, the amount used will not cause and environmental disaster if it leaks and is dropped when the bung is pulled. Far more would go down drains and into the river / ocean after a car crash.

ethylene glycol can eat into
ethylene glycol can eat into the rubber parts of your transducer.

eh?
What do you think your radiator hoses are made out of? It doesn't eat into them

Motorbike coolant? What is this?
I've got 5 motorbikes incl 2 quads, a boat, jet ski & 4x4. In all my yrs building motorised toys I can't say I've heard of this yet. Coolant is coolant, car & bike are the same. The only thing that changes is the strength of the ethylene glycol depending on what percentage of your motor is alloy vs cast iron. Personally I use straight tectalloy gold in my bikes & engines that have a sml cooling capacity. ALL my water jackets look like brand new when I split the engines. Back to topic now...............

I think most liquids will be
I think most liquids will be fine in our temps.. The Propylene glycol is used in colder countries primarily to prevent the liquid inside the housing freezing then expanding then destroying the housing. The colour in radiator coolant is also handy because it has a die which will show up in bilge water, so it is obvious when you are losing fluid.
As stated above pretty much any liquid will do.
I know a couple of people with leaks in their housings and they just keep it topped off with sea water with no issues to performance.

Milk with a food die is
Milk with a food die is effective. Just wash it out after so it doesn't stink.
