EMERGENCY services have
EMERGENCY services have rescued a surfer clinging to his boat after it capsized off Garden Island this morning.
The RAC Rescue helicopter was deployed just before noon and spotted the 18-year-old a few minutes later after a smoke flare was seen south-west of Garden Island about 11am.
Fremantle Sea Rescue was first on the scene just before 1pm, where they found him about 300m offshore clinging to his upturned boat.
Group operations officer Frank Pisani told PerthNow the surfer was wearing a wetsuit and did not suffer any injuries from the incident.
Mr Pisani said he was unsure what caused the boat to capsize.
Fire and Emergency Services Authority said the man's boat was towed back to sea because he wanted to continue surfing.

What is a
surfer doing in a tinny - EVEN I can stand up in a tinny. Funny thing was last night i was suffering from insomnia as usual and spent an hour thinking on how to make tinnys recoverable in the event of a capsize - i'm going to add some exterior bits that will provide hand holds and leverage.

Dam tool who jus wants to
Dam tool who jus wants to surf at any cost, waste of time and energy of the sea resuce, least he could have done was go in and think about how he got into the mess in the first place!

The last bloke that was rescued in that area was a surfer as well,he said conditions were not to bad (he recieved head injuries, nearly died and the boat capsized)
Albee Mangles got a photo of that boat,,
So they towed the boat back out to sea cause he wanted to keep surfing ?What happened to it after that ? hopefully its an artificial reef now,,

its a popular surfing spot
its a popular surfing spot there. quite often jet ski's tow the surfers in and out. Sounds like he may have had the boat moored while he was surfing maybe??

i would have to say it's
i would have to say it's surfers who know the ocean best around reefs and such , but anyone can get caught out.
why is it nearly anyone who needs rescuing is automatically deemed an idiot not worthy of rescue
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Well, there are a lot of idiots out there that should know better...
Though, agree with you that not all people needing rescuing are automatically idiots. If you take a lot of care with safety yourself, you can think that anyone who gets in trouble is an idiot, but in reality they were just unlucky and you've been lucky so far.

They are there for a reason, everyone makes mistakes, it would be nice if we didnt need sea rescue we are just lucky we do have them, i dont think anyone should be that confident that they wont ever need a rescue?

Lost Count
Lost count as to how many capsize boats I have had to retrieve from west of little island of hillarys. They anchor he boat where they think it is safe without checking the conditions on the day. Was OK there last time!!!. Or the wind changes and vessel swings around onto the reef. Quite often they are anchored close to the reef to saving paddling too far.

I was out a few days ago and
I was out a few days ago and was two tinnies anchored in a sand hole that seemed ok (was reasonably deep and a bit of free area around).
Does it make more sense to anchor in an area reasonably close, as long as things like wind direction shift, etc are taken into account. Or anchor inside the reefs (would be slightly E of little island?). If your boat was further away, is it more likely that you'd not notice if the anchor started dragging say? Not really sure what the best way to do it is (but wouldnt mind trying sometime).
And you'd think surfers would be used to looking at the conditions for a while before entering the water. I guess if you've been there a few times it can be easy to get complacent.

All that money wasted for
All that money wasted for someone who appears was not in any danger anyway, he had his surfboard could have paddled the short distance to Garden Island and alerted folks to the fact there was a hazard in the water (his tinny),he could have got a lift home via Garden Island,,he just wanted to save his cheap ass tinny and get back into the surf,,,
