New chartplotter / GPS up to $1,700
Submitted by Mark K on Tue, 2009-02-17 22:47
I have decided that spending money on a chartplotter is one of the more sensible things I can do.
There is already lowrance X47 depth sounder and fishfinder.
I would like this to also be a fishfinder but the primary function is gps/chart. The extra $200 or so in most models for the fishfinder seems good value to have a second sounder.
Also want it to give depth reading as well as chart.
Color
Prefer 480*480 resolution or better.
Use with the laptop - prefer blue chart pacific as I have read they are the best charts in this price range.
Price to include charts and BlueChart g2 Vision SD card,
Fitting and setup - what is involved, and cost?
$1,700 is the upper upper end including all charts and fitting. Hopefully there is also the ability to get a reasonable deal at the moment.
Option of buying from USA which seems a lot cheaper after postage and exchange rate.
The models that have stood out so far are the garmin GPS map 378, 550S and 555S, 545S, Nuvi 500
The 545S seems the best so far with G2 maps, and has some great reviews. I dont know if there is any point in having the GXM31 Smart Antenna in Australia.
I know this is a bit all over the place but I am a bit lost.
I hope all this makes some sort of sense to some of you.
Thanks for any help
Mark

Back before the dollar
Back before the dollar bombed you could get some ok deals on the raymarine a65 combos in the us, I did buy one locally and its so far proved worthwhile. When the unit broke, the local dealer (Challenge Marine in Balcatta) gave me their shop spare to use while mine was being warranted. Well worth the $250 more it costs to buy local.

I've got the 7200c
I've got the 7200c and love it. User friendly and Lowrance use Navionics which have good detail. $1700 should get you pretty close with a all of Australia map. With the dollar the way it is I would buy local, at the moment any warranty problem is not worth the risk. If the savings were substantial them the risk of importing might be worth it. Haven't seen the garmin charts but have been told they have exellent detail.

Don't know the difference
Don't know the difference between platinum and gold but mine is a gold 32xg all of Aust chart with heaps of detail. Was ~$300 12months ago. Been down Dunsbourgh and up to Onslow shows everything. Done the christmas lights in the canals at Mandurah and it showed the finger jetties at each house but not in full detail. If you go to http://www.navionics.com/GoldCatalog.asp it shows what charts run with what plotter.

Site
Yeah I've ordered from that site Mark. 2 weeks postage and very straight forward to deal with, mind you the Aussie Dollar was a bit higher then.
Chart I've got is the Gold Australia Wide job.
