New bru
Hi,
I started fishing the other week. I go to Hillarys and fish off the southern limestone pier area. It's really fun and I do it most days, although I've never caught anything except heaps of blowies and something else that I don't know yet.
I use a rod I found in the shed but it seems pretty good and does what it needs to, though it doesn't cast too far. I used a massive sinker and it casts further now, but it kept getting snagged so am back to a lighter one.
There are a fair few questions I have, but I'll only start with a couple.
What is the point of a swivel? My rig is really primitive as far as I can tell...it's just a sinker on the end, and the hook about 10cm up the line. Is this going to work for catching good fish (my fishing aim is, apart from having fun, to catch a meal)?
Does the line need to be really tight? The wire on my rod has gone pretty curly like a helix, so when I cast out, it's not too tight. Does the sinker need to be heavier or do I need new fishing wire?
Cheers and cool forum

have a look on a few websites and look up some new rigs ; what kinda fish you targetting? a good rig to try is the pasternooster rig , invest in some metal slices- you might catch some tailor or other predatory fish. swivels stop line twist . welcome to the site! try using the search button on the side- maybe type in "rigs" or "hillarys fishing" stuff like that- i havent fished up in hillarys but id say thred be a chance of catching a few different species.. flathead whiting tailor squid bream and so on.. good luck man, hope you catch somethign worth eatign soon!

There a lot off factors..
that you need to be considering for you to start consisantly landing some fish for the table. Rigs, bait, weather, berly , time ect. your local tackle store can be very useful. I recomend avoiding BCF as staff can be a little inexperienced (in catching herring) : ). Try a float style rig to get herring and use some berly to bring them in. Oh and just watch people. If there getting fish, do what there doing.
anyways

Cheers for the advice.
I got a new rod from Santa and a tackle box with a whole lot of stuff. The rod's good, not a Kmart cheapie.
I've had a go at the paternoster using mostly prawns off Hillary's. Not much luck yet but keep trying. I usually go around 5-7 in the evening.
Also, I gave some soft plastic a go, but blowies ate it over about 6 casts! Is that meant to happen? Do they eat plastic?
Cheers again

not a good idea using the plastics around blowies as they will eat anything. you could try using hard body lures or metal slices. but generally bait might be a better bet for the fishing you will be doing. there are plenty of gigs to try for surface and bottom fish. if you want herring go for as surface rig using a burley cage

Watch the fishing shows mate
We oldies tend to bag the shows a bit but at the end of the day they provide some great advice about how to target species in many locations.
The purpose of a swivel (or several of them in my case) is to stop line tangle and help with retrieval. Try watering the garden with a hose and see how painful it is if you don't have a retractable hose reel. Knots, kinks, no water....... it goes on. Much the same happens with line if you don't use good swivels. Kinked line will send you insane and produce many knots (unintended). It also reduces casting distance and weakens the line.
Another tip is to have the tackle shop guys load your reel as this needs to be done properly and the technique is different between mono line and braid.
Two more bits of advice .....
1. Sinkers are only a device to assist casting and to get you to the bottom. I would recommend that you find a setup that requires the minimal amount of weight. The less the better IMO. If the bottom is full of snags then you will be far better served with little or no weight.
2. Check out volume 1 (maybe vol 2.....) of Fishwrecked Reel Time. Colin Hay has a great article in there about fishing Hillarys and believe me... he knows what he is talking about.
Cheers fella. Go get 'em.
