MMSI number

Hi, I have fitted a VHF radio in my boat, when ever I switch it on it prompts me to enter an mmsi number Which I don't have. Do I have to be licensed to get one?
Is it necessary to have one?
Is there any way of getting one without being licensed?

yes you must have a vhf radio license to apply for an MMSI number
they are controlled by AMSA
no you cannot get one without a license
Its not necessary to have one but useful if you get into trouble
its easier for you to google the information than answer it all on here
