Lowrance HDS 5
Hi there all,
sorry for the long winded post...
I have been a member for a while, however I haven't been on for quite some time, due to unforseen circumstances...
However im after some advise if I can ???
I recently brought a Ali 5.5 m boat, so im just learning. I brought how to use a fish finder book, which I found fantastic for a beginner, however the boat I brought has a Lowrance HDS 5 sounder and im having a little trouble with the strong echo's, and the bottom discrimination. I tried all the colour pallets, to get it to a red echo, as most of the sounders are but every time I stop any were I get a thick strong red bottom, so im confused on how to read a strong echo, I went back to the original settings and the strong echo seems to be yellow ?
on the way in I stopped on a small patch of reef in Cockburn sound (Jervois bank)just off the ASI groyne, and had a play around, I still couldn't discriminate a strong echo, I had thick yellow on and off the reef...
Any advise, on colour/pallet settings ?????

Hey Ric. I use the HDS5 and
Hey Ric. I use the HDS5 and find pallet number 13 has the most colours and shows the best discrimination. Rock and reef will show as red, grass and weed as green and fish usually blue. Also split the screen, use the bottom lock feature and look at the dark "tails" (as described in the fish finder book) that run below the bottom lock line. Big tails mean uneven ground (reef or rocks).

PS thick red echos/arches will only show if large fish are present and under certain circumstances
