Prawn boats in the peel entrance back in the day.

I've lived in Mandurah all my life and have been looking on the internet for pictures of the prawn boats that used to be moored in the channel entrance. They were there for years but I cannot find a single picture of them on the internet. Be cool if anybody has a photo of this or any stories they could share cheers.

That's surprising I thought they have been gone a bit longer than that.

I can access imagery back to 1961. Where exactly did they use to moor?

Just inside of the original mouth entrance. They used to hang the nets out each side and catch the prawns as they ran to the ocean at night. I reckon there would of been a bit of rivalry for position. Not sure how the used to work that out amongst themselves.

 Hopefully this works.

See attached from April 1985 and January 1995. One I've zoomed in to show that it clearly looks like nets out the side. In the zoomed out version of taht you can also see what looks to be another similar boat just inside the marina. Unfortunately the photo quality back then was shit!

Can someone please remind me how to embed photos? I searched but there is just so much content and a lot of it is very old now.

Old advice

Wed, 2025-06-04 10:36

There is a conversation between ranmar and stevo at the bottom of this thread that might still be current?

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/improving-fishwrecked

and one here about embedding videos that also might be useful?

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/how-post-youtube-video

It is also possible to copy and paste someone else's embedded photo by simply using rightclick/copy, as you can see from Ranmars pic from the thread I linked above.

I seem to recall my old man (he's 98) saying there were some in the Swan as well. Battle library or fisheries archives maybe.

local history

i remember every one under the old mandurah bridge scoping them as they came thru. A bit of argy bary sometimes. and the small boat on the up river side of the bridge , tilly lamp hanging off the bow and sides scoping them.

i also remember all the cray boats that used to anchor up in safety bay, Crom Wilson, the Hunters, Waters and Moreysits all sand there now. we would dive on the moorings for occy at 3 pennce a pound and got 2 bob for a cobbler.
