lost brilliant fishing spots

why do we put up with the lose of our historic land based fishing platforms eg Robbs jetty , great spot for tailor back in the day , still remeber those days kero lanterns and ding sangas , carnarvon jetty (well the last 150 meters of it) burnt by shit heads and probably the best mulloway spot in wa in its day , sampson jetty yes flattened by a cyclone but could have been rebuilt , it was a spot you could catch a big spanish mackeys with out needing a boat , i can remember the days you could drag the swan on a stinking hot saturday night for prawns with the bonous of a few cobbler in the net and your dad would always put you on the deep end of the drag net ahh bugger i am getting old

Carnarvon Jetty too, mulla's on one side and skinnies on the other.

Never forget
the blood red water at Robbs jetty.
North beach jetty used to be quite long too. Ferries used to leave there for Rotto ! Now it's a joke.

Living NoR with small kids,
Living NoR with small kids, the winter swells make a suitable jetty unviable and the Hillarys disabled ramp completely misses the mark.
On a positive note the Dawesville Cut is one of my all time favourite 'new' accessible fishing spots for a shore bash.

What we are living through is called progress (I call it very bad decisions by people) A lot of people say we are living through the real good times of the vibrancy of todays society, what crap.
Very sadly Pete those times you recall where without doubt the best times of our lives, no worrying about being killed by some brain dead meth head whilst fishing at the end off a jetty at night.
Just how do you tell when someone is thinking of these times, they have a smile on their face as big as a Cheshire cat.

unortunatly you are so correct , kids of these days will never experience , that with their dads unless they have a boat , it was great on robbs jetty with ,my dad and uncle jim the crackly old trany tumed into the trotts banter between the aussies and the italians (all good ) over the races , helping each other out , i remeber we got our car towed back to freo when it wouldnt start by some italians dad was beside himself , i wish these barstards would slow down he kept saying

i remeber catching blue mackrel at freo harbour and all the italians used to spit the burley out of there mouths not sure what it was but it worked good

Yep, it was raw potato, fishing with a cain stick, no reel and a line into the water. Mackerel and yellowtail by the bucket full. Everyone wondered what they did with them, but I can tell you. They made fish cakes and they weren't too bad either.

Plenty of memories fishing
Plenty of memories fishing the one mile as a kid. Also the prawning jetty and the little rubbish tip jetty was a cracker too.
Learmonth was a great spot back in the day too.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Bunbury Jetty
Spent many days fishing off the Bunbury jetty and knew all the good spots. Same goes for the outer and inner harbours till they shut them off to the public.
Used to have a hand line and knife for getting mussels hidden under the jetty for when mates and I used to wag school giving what we caught to some poor blokes who didn't catch anything.
There is a petition going out for saving Carnarvon's jetty, don't have the details as yet but will try to chase them up or if someone has them can they please put them up
Sorry to see the prawning jetty in Carnarvon falling to bits and it's ready supply of prawn factory waste cease due to them now processing their product overseas then shipping it back to OZ

It's definitely a problem
It's definitely a problem where the jettys are getting run down and neither local nor state want to spend money to maintain them
Over the past few decades it's been a case of running out the clock with the jettys to the point they deteriorate where they can fence them off to deny access due to safety
The population is increasing (With people wanting to fish), the amount of jettys is declining and distance to 4WD beaches is getting further
Barney was talking about fishing platforms in the swan.. I don't disagree with them but i'd rather see more accessible platforms to the ocean

They made a huge mistake when they pulled down Palm Beach jetty for what they have now. They were not thinking about the fisho's when they designed and built that.

the good old days carrying my tripod out over the trigg reef and bait casting mulies into the blue hole
wearing black rubber waders , taft water proof jacket , wait until 10 pm when the street light s would go out ,
in the complete darkness. xxl tailor , salmon , and mulloway and the odd pinky

you realy are showing your age mate haha i do rember the tripod fisherman i never did it but , me and a mate used to crawl out under the freo train bridge when were kids and drop down handlines and pick up xxos tailor that were being attracted under the bridge because of the lights used to hang on for grim death when a train went over the top of us dont think you could do that these days

I dont think your too old mate, if your still able to remember the smell of whale oil burley at robbs,
the excitement of sorting jumping prawns by the hiss of a gas light in the swan, or the twang of a 150lb handline when
some unseen monster ripped it away , then you arn''t done yet.
Some of mine from the 70,s are big skippy at the Albany jetty while a italian lady beat the crap out of some hapless occy, snorkling for endless crabs and mussles
at woodies, or handlining for bream and yellowtail on the sand dune just up from the moore river mouth.
Only farmers had 4wd,s , most just used handlines from boats , with solid glass rods with wire runners for everyone else.
No bloody mobiles, just paper sounders, super in ya hq 202, if ya could find a roster open.............some say we are just looking at it with rose tinted glasses, but they
really were simpler times , not necessarily better just more innocent maybe?.

Paper sounders
theres history , i saved my ares of to get the latest paper sounder on my 4.3 stacer centre console , you would only turn it on when you thought you where near good ground , a new roll of paper was out of the question on apprentice wages , so we would take it out turn up side down and run it through again and hopefully the top image didnt cross the bottom image ,
the good old stacer 4.3 i use to launch at trigg point boat ramp with my 3.3 lt TD cortina and run out through the very small channel to open ocean

I used to snorkel the flat
I used to snorkel the flat limestone reef and pipe line (just up from the shipwreck) for occys once a week during the warmer months until they plonked port Coogee marina right on top of it I miss that place

You didn't need a degree in digital science to run it like you do with all the wiz bang stuff of today.

Ross Cusack, Phil Bodeker, Cleggie etc :).
Used to also enjoy those nights on the river bank sorting through the prawn net looking for a king prawn or two :), or hoping to catch a 6lb Bream in the winter months at Canning Bridge..

Closed stirling dam and sampson dam and closed upper harvey river and samson brook. Some of the best trout and marron waters in all of WA.
