Alot of people do. Its a great alternative to heavy 24kg outfits. Can be used for driftbaiting as well as light bottom fishing for KGs etc etc.

All you need is a 8 -10kg baitcaster rod and a little baitcaster that will hold sufficient 20lb braid. This outfit can be use upto 60m or even 80m dpeth on a really good day.

Every now and then I use my Barra raider/Curado combo as a light BB rod, and it has slayed some descent fish to. Heaps of fun, but if I use it deep it hasnt got the grunt to get fish out of the way of graycoats if needed.

Not sure exactly which rods

Not sure exactly which rods you're talking about, but they can make great whiting/boat rods. One combo I use a lot from a boat is my salty fighter/ saltist 20LD. I've found its perfect for most of the stuff you do out of a small boat.

Works really well for whiting because it can still handle 8oz sinkers (if its windy) but the tips still fold a bit when you have whiting on so you can keep the pressure on to stop them dropping off as easily. Works better than a really heavy combo for example. I've previously used 8lb rods/small threadline reels but harder to use if its a windier day and the overhead setup works better to crank the whiting/rig up. Easier to thumb down too.

The combo is also well suited to fishing for other reef fish or things like pinkies or KG's. You can also troll for tuna/mackies using it, so would be about the most versatile combo you can get for a small boat. Makes a good driftbait rig for even fishing the 40's though.

The only thing I dont like about the baitcasters though is that their retreive ratios are quite close slow, so when you are pulling whiting/the rig up it can take a bit of time to get it to the surface (assuming you're keeping them). Also, if drift baiting in 40, you can have 100m of line out, same with tuna skirts, so can just be a LOT of winding to get it back in. Otherwise it works well, especially with the thumb disengage/wind to engage bit.
