Mate - ignore the punters and buy a patrol, the 3lt had a few problems that were fixed in 2002. I had a 2003 and did 100000km of enjoyable trouble free driving including a fair bit of beach work and towing to exxy and back several time. Are they fast, no, are they super powerful, no, are they a 100 series TD not quite, but you will still have $20,000 in your pocket over an 06 Landcruiser and they are not that much better if money is an issue. If not then buy the landcruiser. In fact just buy the 200 series TD and smile if money is not a factor. But value for money a second hand patrol is great.

personally i would be looking at the 4.2ltr diesel. i have been looking out of interest for a while and value for $ i would go the nissan patrol. from many conversations with owners of both patrol and cruiser the patrol wins hands down for economy and price.

 but thats just my opinion

Had a 4.2 turbo

Fri, 2011-04-08 23:58

for 5 years - one small issue with a turbo pipe - but no piles because unlike a Cruiser ute it has seats, not planks to sit on, it looked like a 2007 vehicle, not a WW2 leftover, it pulled like a choirboy and was generally a bloody tough vehicle.

Ive got a 01 Patrol 3lt

Sat, 2011-04-09 06:25

Ive got a 01 Patrol 3lt turbo... No drama's with it yet (touch wood). Done several trips from Broome to Perth and back. Towing a 2tonne excavator down and the tinny back again... Out to the fitzroy River and kimberlies heaps towing boat on some pretty rough tracks...

Been going well... Cant fault it yet. If going offroad heaps get a 2"lift and some air lockers...Pulled out 6 newish cruisers on cable beach so far(up north end where it gets real boggy). Then youll be rescuing the toyota fans on here.... lol

But in saying this if money was no drama then id probly be getting a cruiser to and abit of fruit put on it also..

4WD Forum is where I would be looking for answers, then off to some reputable mechanics and driveline specialists. Take a note book with you to jot down all the imfo.

Toyota 4 me at the minute.

Sat, 2011-04-09 08:54

you will get a very nice patrol for that coin. I paid $31000 for mine 6 years back for  a 2003 with 25000km and all the fruit on it so I would guess you would get a nice 06.

By 2004 most of the problem

Sat, 2011-04-09 09:03

By 2004 most of the problem with the 3l diesel had been fixed so you should be fine.If worried you can install a few things such as boost gauges/egt block the egr and you will never have any trouble. If it was me though i would be looking the 4.8 petrol enough power to leave standard commodores/falcon off the lights and you don't even know you have anything behind you if towing.Fuel usage can be a concern but when you weight up the generally cheaper buy price, servicing etc the petrol doesn't really cost anymore the run than the diesel. You won't go wrong either way....

Post 03 3.0TD are good

Sat, 2011-04-09 11:26

Post 03 3.0TD are good vehicles. The 4.2TD is like a tractor & will live forever - they have held their resale value like hens teeth. Patrols are excellent value for money vehicles. Excellent 4WD's. I've had a 3.0TD (common rail) & a 4.2. Still keep looking at for a 4.2 Ute, but can't justify the dollars they fetch at the moment.

I had a 2001 3.0L Nissan and it was a disaster. We had a lot of fuel issues and replaced the fuel pump and then the lift pump. It turned out to be a faulty oxygen sensor all along (after $5 K). We then blew No 2 piston while towing my ski boat up Logues Brook Dam road. Another $12k. The guys who did up the motor put a waste gate in the turbo to release excess pressure. This is evidently a big fault with the 3.0L. They reckon when the waste gate is put in the motors are then OK. Anyway I lost faith and did get a Toyota LPG/petrol. So far so good except a few backfire issues. Anyway my 2 bobs worth.

gotta agree with you on the probs of the 01 and 02 models, all was sorted out by the 03 and onwards. this info came from a nissan mechanic thats why i went the 04 navara. no probs and went like a shower of you know what and was great off road. the patrols are a bit less gutsy but still strong enough, just gotta look at how many of the greay nomads drive the nissan over the cruiser when towing the big caravans

Patrol

Sat, 2011-04-09 15:11

I have had a gq 4.2 diesel for years and couldn't recommend it enough. Yes they are a bit slower but patrols are tougher stock standard and the bodies are cheap to fit out with fruit. If you can't afford a powered up cruiser then a patrol will not dissappint

The diesels will do anywhere

Sun, 2011-04-10 09:35

The diesels will do anywhere from 11-14l/100  and the petrols between 16-22l/100 around town they may drop a bit cruising on the highway.

Sun, 2011-04-10 09:37

if its anything like the old boys v8 100 series my guess would be really poor on the highway we average 18L/100 opose to the 3 litre patroll wich was roughly 11L/100

Second hand they should be ok. The previous owner would hopefully fixed the bubbled up dash, the reversing camera, the cruise control, the cracks in the injector rail, the bearings on the turbo, the broken door handles/hinges, open circuits across the wiring harness plugs and the whine in 5th gear.

Be easier than hoping someone sells their Land Cruiser.

Good luck.

The olds man has a 02 nissan

Sun, 2011-04-10 20:01

The olds man has a 02 nissan patrol ute with the 4.2 diesel turbo has had no issues since he bought if in 04.

It has coils all round with air bags. Recently he put a winch and air lockers. This thing has been mainly up bush like Karatha in and out of the creeks. It is un breakable. I ocassionaly use it to tow the 7m leisurecat and it has plenty of grunt. The leisurecat weights 3.3 tonnes and the patrol doesn't really feel the weight behind her.

It is pure class with out the price tag.

4.2 TD

Mon, 2011-04-11 09:26

I have had a 4.2 TD nissan for the last 4 years tows the boat which is 3.5t on the trailer, with plenty of grunt. Like others have said it won't win any races off the line but it's a tough and reliable 4wd. Looked at a Cruiser at the same time, and could not justify spending an extra 20k for a 4wd that was the same year with way more k's on the clock.
