How long does quality gear last in the saltwater??

Ok, so a mate of mine's boat sunk the other day... with all his gear. We have organised a diver to go out to the boat to salvage the gear (hopefully). Does anyone know how gear goes in the saltwater, is there any chance the gear will still be usable? I've heard arguments for both sides of the coin. Most of the stuff is pretty good shimano and daiwa stuff.

Any information would be great.

At least he'll get the rods back.. dont think we'll have to much luck with the new sounder :(

Hopefully we can find out what happened to the boat.

Problem probably wont be the salt. I have dived a boat that sank a day later. Picked up alot of gear that was fine and serviced up no problems. The current had knocked the boat around a bit and where the hull was rocking on the sand it had worn right through the ally. Cowl off engine was missing and leg was smashed.

Rods and reels

The rods and reels should be ok after a rinse in fresh water and a service for the reels. Depending what electronics are on board could be another matter. A lot of the latest ones are nitrogen filled and sealed so could be ok but you would have to get them seen to asap. The same goes for the outboard, it will need a complete pull down and possible replacement of its electics as well.

Hopefully insurance will cover most losses?

He paid for $4000 for the boat/motor, it was a good deal at the time. It was old but perfect for what we needed and bought from a friend. No insurance unfortunately. He's not to fussed about the outboard.. he was most cut up about the rods/reels so if he can get them back that would be unreal. As for the sounder it was a new Lowrance H-5, so maybe he could be in with a chance with that. Who knows.
