how long ?

i was goin to post this as a reply to one of allrounders comments, but fishwrecked was slow last night and it wouldnt post, but this probably deserves its own thread anyway.

how long do you reckon it will take before fisheries put some kind of ban or restrictions on the breeding sambos aggregations?

around this time of year, when the reports of sharks being so thick at the ags, that hardly a hooked fish is landed because of them. not only that, but fisheries have put a 2 month ban on demersals at this particular time of year, as it is when the majority of demersals come in closer to shore to breed, thus making them susceptible to more boat fishermen, will they do the same to the sambos to protect what is/has become literally a world class sportfishery?

more so, when will us recs and charters start drawing the line as to when we go out and target them, knowing full well that they are breeding, and that the chances of landing one or two are severley decreased, as a result of the sharks? i think the onus should be on EVERY skipper (including charter skippers), to start thinking a bit more conservatively, and when the reports of 50+ fish hooked, but only 3 landed, make the call to give it a rest. perhaps if we dont make the pro-active descisions, you-know-who will make them for us. breeding fish wont breed if they are dead (or severely disrupted).

some are saying (and I totally agree with) that the shark numbers out there are increasing at greater numbers, every year. they're not dumb. i was out at the southern barges a few weeks ago, and there was 17 other boats out there. the sharks know when and where to get an easy feed (a hooked sambo/amber), and it was realistically only a matter of time before this became a problem.

i guess there is also the possibility of starting to target the sharks too, but out of the sharks out there - great whites, bronzies, and makos, the whites are protected (GGGGRRRRRRR....), bronze whalers are protected over a certain size (1.8m), and WTF are you goin to do with a 4m mako shark? (although adventure bound yesterday, the host kept 2 "good sized eating" makos...). plus, you are goin to require some serious gear to handle the size of some of them out there.

what are all your thoughts on the above?

I think people will be

I think people will be targetting the sharks sooner rather than later. Time to break out the 15 and 24kg standup gear.

It will happen pretty soon.

It will happen pretty soon. If you lost more than two fish to sharks, thats exceeding your bag limit IMO.

The funny thing is people complain about living in a nanny state!

Has to Happen !

Mon, 2010-11-08 10:53

Unfortunately it is going to have to happen .

Some people cant be trusted to do the right thing .....so the regulators will take control and impose there rules and regulations upon us all .

Scotto did you read the article in the Sunday Times about the Pro Abalone diver ?

yeah mate.

yeah mate, i read that, and the write up about kenny crew. that was a chilling story hey. poor bloke.

funny how the fisheries and researchers concluded that a increase in white numbers was not likely, but the guy who has spent the last 18 years of his working life underwater in gw areas, says he would bet his left nut that the numbers and sizes are bigger, and he has had more experiences recently, than in the past.

definately great to see our hard earned taxes being conservatively spent on research that is obviously flawed, and relaying inaccurate outcomes.

makos

Mon, 2010-11-08 11:24

the mako ban got knocked on the head at the last minute. as far as i'm aware, makos are fair game, australia wide.

bronze whalers are protected after a certain length (1.8m overall, or 700mm from front of dorsal, to rear of interdorsal fins), but can be caught and released if too big.

Why just Sambo's?

There are others worth protecting too, Swan River Mulloway are an example, they always get hammered when the demersal ban is on as well, they are a classic example of a fish purely targetted at spawning time, and dont release at all. With the demersal ban often coincides with the start of their prime time, how long before theres none of them left.

yep.

that is a very valid point albee, and i also agree with you there, but i dont think the mulloway are getting smashed in the same numbers as any given day at any of the barges.

Your right Scotto

Mon, 2010-11-08 13:25

I totally agree, but they also dont exist in the same numbers, peak season, with 10 boats in Mossies a night, say 2 fish caught, thats a lot of mature, slow growing fish being taken.

copy that.

point taken and noted, and agreed with 100%. its all definately relevant with regards to overall numbers, but.....

mulloway in the swan is not what im talking about. i'm refering to the amount of sambos being killed day in, day out, buy what is obviously an increasing shark problem, and at what stage do we need to realistically start calling it quits, before we realise we are doing severe damage to our sportfishery and sambo stocks.

it's a shame but

Mon, 2010-11-08 13:29

it's a shame but irresponsible skippers who just stay out on the barges , pulling sambo heads in every drop , are their own worst enemy. something will be done i'm sure.

if  you're getting sharked , leave.

it's not hard

i agree in every aspect ,

Mon, 2010-11-08 19:18

i agree in every aspect , soon as the ban is on for demersals many other species or fish are Hammered , the number one on the list the sambo's . An yes man is his own worst enemy , you want to make a living out of fishing sambo's but you dont mind depleting the stock by a few hundred fish ( per charter boat) every season when they get axed by sharks . great job , soon enough there will be bans and if not the sambo aggregations will be at a loss.
