Sat, 2011-01-15 21:22

yeah, it was pretty damn windy. hooked upto to something pretty weighty not long after i arrived. Diehard then rocked up just as i was hooking him. had a bit of a run but i managed to turn his head before he took off. brought him in real close, but he was still sittin at depth. for the next 40 odd minutes i tried to pull him from the bottom. by this stage we were pretty confident it was a ray, so i wasnt too concerned if i lost him. finally lifted the bastard from the floor but he didnt like that and took off for the horizon! needless to say, busted me off. didnt have much more luck, only a few small buff bream. eric then managed to hook into one signifigantly larger than the others, and after a short fight, did him on the rocks. we kinda gave up after that tbh. not a bad afternoon, just glad it wasnt epicly hot, but could have done with a bit less wind.

Tue, 2011-01-18 06:41

Flour and Pollard mixture or if your feeling rich loaves of bread, rip some off it and press it onto the hook into a ball, make sure to throw some premade ones into the water before hand to get them use to seeing and eating it, thats is what i use for ones under 5kg, over 5kg i use size 7/0-8/0 octopus hooks with a small bean sinker and sea lettuce as bait, make sure to burley up the area, with the big guys a hour before sunset is best or hour before sunrise where there is big schools of them, but with all the reports these guys make about Hillarys being a all day buff bream spot i might go there myself and check it out.

Edit: forgot to mention the big ones in regards to feeling the bites its not so to feel the bite, just little nibbles like small skippy bites.

Tue, 2011-01-18 10:08

i would use smaller hooks but have managed to break a few and bent a few, i reckon i would straighten those wide gaps hooks but could be wrong, i mainly use those for big blackies and coral prawn hardly miss a strike.

Tue, 2011-01-18 12:39

The owner aki hooks come reasonably small (a lot smaller than 7/0) and no chance of bending those out. Though i'd be surprised if other hooks wouldnt be fine as well. Maybe you're just using really light gauge small hooks?

 Cheers might check out

Tue, 2011-01-18 12:47

Cheers might check out those, i use to use these little black carbon coated hooks that were really small like 1/0?  was matt black with japanese writing on the packet and could only get it from asia now those were some strong hooks but cant find it anywhere in australia, also there was gold coloured hooks that were tiny and rediculously sharp with japanese writing too, this was many years ago when mustad and gamagatsu was the shiznit but these little hooks put them to shame for quality.

never bent/broken a hook on a buffy (part from a crappy rusted old one hahah). the wide gaps are perfect, get the buffy corner of the mouth everytime. makes for an easy retreive. also, means the smaller ones cant swallow the hook, like ive had with some smaller hooks.

size 6 for the small

Tue, 2011-01-18 21:31

size 6 for the small buffys---8lb fluro ;)

size 2 for the big buffys----15lb fluro ;)

Use gama circles... never bend on me because i never lock up enough drag i let them run because they can get the quickest burst of energy and snap your line like that!

biggest i have landed is 3.5kg and after that one fish my 15lb fluro snapped when i pulled the line tight... those buffys have quite the teeth ;)

also small buffys are all day long.

medium and small are either 5am-9am///1pm-4pm///6pm-7:30pm

Big Buffys and medium 5am-7am////7pm-7:45pm (hint: the big one come on sunset and dont hang around, but speed up and down the rocks)

I've seen then while diving the Patches at the Abrolhos that would have gone easy 25kg. Good 1.2-1.3 long.
