Fishwrecked.com to be represented at East Timor's first International Fishing Competition

Hey Crew,

Just thought I would put up a post about an event coming up that I'm rather excited about.  It appears that the Fishwrecked Team have some contacts in some very high places!  As a result I have received an invitation from the East Timorese President to cover their Inaugural International Fishing Competition for fishwrecked and the fw-reeltime magazine.

The competition will be held over 3 days at the end of November and apparently there are 100+ Aussies competing along with numerous Malay and Singaporeans and I'm not sure who else.  Anyway, I have no real idea of what to expect, not even sure if I'm fishing in the competition or just covering it from a press angle.  One thing is for sure that I will be taking a hell of a lot of photos and videos for you guys to check out on fishwrecked and also in the reeltime magazine.

Here's a bit of info on the location below.  One way or another it should be excellent.  If I do get to fish, I will make sure I do you all proud and try and take out a few of the sections.  You never know, we may be able to enter our own team in future years! :)

Cheers,

Adam

Other Info:

Atauro Island is approximately 104 sq kms in area and 25 kms in length. It is a dry place and the population of 10,000 people is spread in 20 small hamlets over the island. These hamlets are divided into five main sucos (or villages): Makadade, Makili, Bikili, Vila and Beloi. Each suco has its own specific traditions, culture and even dialects, some of which are shared with neighbouring Indonesian islands.

The island of Atauro is in fact a member of the Inner Banda Arc of islands (in contrast to Timor, which is part of the Outer Arc) which includes the volcanic islands of Lombok through to the Banda islands. There are no active volcanoes on the surface of the island, though the hotsprings that are present around the coastline are evidence of Atauro’s geological connection to the “Ring of Fire”.

The highest point of the island,Mount Manacoco (literallythe crow of the rooster) at 995 meters, dominates the scenery. Many surrounding islands can be seen from the plateau at the top of the island which is dominated by grassy savannas and Eucalypt trees.Primary dry and evergreen tropical rainforests can also be found on the mountain peaks and valleys at the top of the island.

The entire island is ringed by a coral reef which starts at 3 meters and goes down beyond the reach of conventional scuba diving. This reef ecology makes for spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving Great visibility in the dry season and warm tropical water the whole year round are guaranteed here. Visitors can explore an unbelievable variety of pristine, live coral and aquatic species while drifting off the shoreline of Atauro. The underwater canyon off the South of Atauro and the geographical location of Timor-Leste, which lies witin the “Coral Triangle”, means that visitors are often witness to dolphins, whales, huge schools of gathering pelagics and even the rare dugong, or manatee.

In Portuguese colonial times the island was a prison, criminals and political prisoners – even from other Portuguese colonies (Angola, Macau, Guinea Bissau)- were banished there. Descendents of some of these prisoners still live on Atauro today and have integrated with the indigenous population.

From 1979 to 1983 (during the Indonesian period) the island was used as a place of exile to which supporters of the resistance movement and their families were sent in an effort to weaken the mainland resistance. In the early 80s several thousand people were exiled to Atauro in a ‘survive or die’ manner - Atauro people received and assisted them and the International Red Cross sent food but it was a harsh existence. By the mid-80s most people had returned to the mainland but some have remained by choice.

The majority of people live around the coastline and fishing is an important part of their livelihoods. Fishing is still mostly traditional (spears and nets) and subsistence agriculture provides basic produce for consumption and sale. Fresh water is the biggest challenge that the people of Atauro face.

You were my next call Brad, if Adam couldnt go....I promise Wink

You never know we may well get a team together for next year.

But let's see how this year goes first.

Good luck Adam, onwards and upwards. Just looked at the site stats for FW and over half a million page views a month is pretty big in anyone's language.

Getting invited is site recognition, well done. Can't wait for the report and the pics. Should be awesome and I already have my hand up for next year. Bet not many of those attending regularly catch and release billies from a 14 ft dinghy. You'll do us proud.

Cheers guys and a big thanks goes out to Andy Mac.  Will be interesting to see what they have on offer and what the skippers know about the place for sports fishing.  Won't be taking too much heavy gear, just some bits n pieces, sure it will be fun either way. :)
