Fish ID Please

A friend of ours is holidaying just south of us at bunker bay and took the boat out to get away from the fire.... He caught the fish in the pic close to shore and sent me a pic to see if I could ID it but I have never seen one like it. Can anyone shine some light on what it could be and what they are like for eating??????

It has been filleted and frozen as they are waiting for a reply before they cook it.

Cheers,
David

Dusky Morwong

Its a dusky morwong, usually not caught on a line as they are weed eaters. If you fillet it you will notice the flesh is a bluey/greyish colour. They can be eaten if you cook them by the same method used to cook pink and grey galahs.

Get a large pot, fill it nearly to the top with very salty water, add a big lump of granite or blue metal, add the fish cut into chunks.Boil for 2 days topping up the pot when the level drops with tomato sauce and vinegar. At the end of the cooking time ,drain the water mixture off, chuck the fish away and eat the rocks as they are softer and tastier than the fish

And the amazing thing is when i was last in Victoria they sell Dusky's at all the fish and chips stores over there as Butterfish. Apparently the locals didnt mind it. Think i'll stick to all the other yummy alternatives we have over here.

I tried some

last year from around the same area - it was edible but not something i would pay for. The guy who gave it to me had left it cleaned in slurry so this may have leached whatever tastes unpleasant out of it.
