Casting Weight on Rods

Was just talking to Hoju on MSN and im puzzled...

You know when you look down on your rod and it has "lure weight 28 grams - 40 grams" its pretty self explanitory....

But is that specifically talking about lures, taking into consideration that this would be the optimum weight to keep the lure's action and movement the best?

Or is this the optimum casting weight aswell??? Because now I think about it....

How much would a whole mulie ganged or snelled on a paternoster rig, using a size 4 star or snapper sinker rig weigh? Surely a whole mulie would nearly be like 40-60 grams by itself, combine hooks and then the sinker itself would be 80-100 grams...

Im trying to suss out what the max any given rod could give before putting itself in danger :P

Casting weights are a recomendation on what the rod is "suited for" but it can be used with less or more weight but not ideal/looses performance and nothing to do with the lure action. Smaller/lighter graghite rods are highly sensative so caution should be taken to stick with the recommended weights etc but glass/graphite composite can load up more in general.

i have a salmon lite rod which says 35-70 gms and anything between those 2 weights is a dream flying through the air....100m + casts but i use a beach rod with 80-120 gms and with a star sinker + mulie and i can get the same result ..100m+ casts.....any thing i use over these weights with each rod , well then my casting is restricted too 100m - ......so use the rod with the correct weight of lure or sinker, bait and i think youll enjoy casting alot more....it should be a lot easier as you wont be trying as hard
