Casting with an overhead - distance
Hi all,
Went to the North Mole on Saturday night and had the experience of trying to cast into the wind with the TN16 and 30lb mono for my first shot at slide baiting.
(Was a bit of a disaster. My grapnel wouldn't hold so the bait wouldn't slide out. Was using 5 ounces.) Also couldn't get much of a cast out.
I am wondering about how far I should be able to cast.
The rig was a TN16 in good condition, Daiwa Sensor Surf Heavy, 30lb mono and when giving it some practice on the oval with a 4 ounce spoon I was getting about 75m with a standard haul it back and punch it forward cast. Couldn't seem to get any more. Needing more weight or better technique? I don't know.
Any comments?
How far can you guys cast with a rig like the one described?
What sort of improvement for a 6 ounce sinker?

Just keep practicing down at the park man. It can take a while to master an overhead cast, just stick with it. Also I think their are some good instructional vids on youtube just look up overhead casting.

Step into it
Hard to do on the north mole Cam, but loading up on the swing back and stepping into the cast is the way I was shown.

Practice practice practice.
Practice practice practice. And once you get good, practice some more. lol. 5 ounce into the wind off a flat platform where I can move (ie beach) usually get 50-75m depending on wind and depending how much I want to put into the cast.
If you think your good at casting and mechanically minded, buy some quantum hot sauce or similar bearing oil and pull your reel apart and lube the bearings on each side of the spool. The trinidad has casting breaks on the right side of the spool, swap them out with the lighter ones you get in the box.
