they do. we have released one and i saw it swimming out towards my other bait. took a guess of when it would get there and reefed my rod. what do u know i caugth a port jackson the same length of my last one and once i took the hook out it was bleeding a bit in 2 differnt hook spots

They are a pest!
there are always heaps even in winter,i have no idea why they are protected.
