Norwest Queenie

Headed to NW reef off exmouth to target some queenies. Water was crystal clear (at 10m deep, you could pick out every snag and fish on the bottom). After getting sharked and having another spit the hook, I finally managed to get a queenie on fly. Perfect back cast into the school, but too much slack, so was stripping like mad to get the fly to start moving. When it finally did I was on in two strips. The queenie jumped, but wasnt all that large and spat the hook soon after landing. Stripping the fly back to the boat, when it was barely 2m from the boat, a bigger queenie came up, engulfed the fly and swam back to the deep. Firm hookset and it was on. Fought like a queenie should with lots of runs, and lots of jumps. Excellent fun :D

awsome mate, what fly did you use? self tied? and what size rod and tippet were you using? i'm just getting into my fly fishing and i love it.
I live with fear every day... sometimes she lets me go fishing.

Synthetic clouser, 8wt, 30lb
Synthetic clouser, 8wt, 30lb tippet/bite leader. Gotta use a sinking line for the most part though (go go outbound). I coulda ran lighter tippet, but I really wanted to land one and I had 30lb in my leader, so tied it straight on (otherwise, i woulda ran to a lighter tippet only to go back to the 30lb bite tippet which seemed a bit pointless as I was unlikely to get snagged). I tend to downgrade gear as I catch a few fish, but for fly fishing i havent really bothered tippet switching (still pretty new to it though).

I caught a couple of decent fish, but considering it was 2 weeks fishing, I cant say the whole trip was a great time unfortunately.
