to be honnest the fight was quiet dissapointing, i think it could of been the fact that it had swallowed the lure and was lodged into the gills so it bleed out. a few good runs but when it came to the boat there was just a big trail of blood. iam suprised a shark never got it
i was suprised about the amount of sharks, i was expecting alot more. in the 2 weeks i was up at emouth we only caught 3 . but there were 2 bust offs possible from sharks
Yeah its a spanish mate. They a hell of a lot bigger too! I think it was adam gallash and gully that sighted a 50kg plus spanish launching out fo the water at exmouth with a 10kg tuna in its gob!
Nice spaniard. I think King Mackerel (USA) are the same as our Spanish Mackerel. The fish that they call a Spanish Mackerel in America is a different fish.
King mackerel inhabit coastal waters from the Gulf of Maine to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Gulf of Mexico, and they are most commonly found from the Chesapeake Bay southward. They are found only occasionally in the upper Bay.
The adult fish has an elongated body with a narrow head and pointed snout, and appears iridescent blue-and-green dorsally with plain silver sides. Juveniles also have five or six irregular rows of bronze spots along their sides.
King mackerel are solitary surface dwellers that tend to be found near shore, often among reefs, wrecks or other underwater structures. Immature fish school, and sometimes mix with schools of Spanish mackerel of similar sizes. King mackerel are migratory, in response to water temperature, and prefer temperatures no lower than 68 degrees F.
These mackerel appear to spawn over a protracted period, with several peaks. On the Atlantic coast, larvae have been collected from May through October. Larval distribution indicates that spawning occurs in the western Atlantic off the Carolinas, Cape Canaveral and Miami. There does not appear to be a well-defined area for spawning.
King mackerel prefer to consume fish but also have been known to eat shrimp and squid.
Female king mackerel can live for up to 14 years.
Spanish Mackerel
Spanish mackerel live in the coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, from the Gulf of Maine to the Yucatan Peninsula.
They are a schooling fish, preferring shallow coastal ocean waters, but they freely enter tidal estuaries.
The Spanish mackerel also has an elongated, compressed body and pointed snout, and is dusky blue dorsally with a silver underside.
These mackerel are found most frequently in water temperatures between 70 and 88 degrees F, and rarely in waters below 64 degrees F. Spanish mackerel is a common visitor to the middle and lower Chesapeake Bay from spring to autumn, sometimes swimming as far north as the mouth of the Patuxent River.
Like the king, Spanish mackerel is a surface-dwelling, near-shore species, that will migrate over long distances in large schools along the shore. As water temperatures in the south increase, it moves north, entering the Bay when temperatures exceed 63 degrees F.
They spawn off Virginia over a long period between late spring and late summer.
Spanish mackerel consume small fishes, shrimp and squid, and reach a maximum age of 8 years.
8 years is a pretty short life span. yeah its a spanish mach and they do grow alot bigger. but your not ment to eat them once they get over 24 kg because they could have that Ciguatera Poisoning.
Ciguatera poisoning in humans and domestic animals is caused by potent neurotoxins. these toxins accumulate through the food chain, from small fish grazing on algae on coral reefs into the organs of larger top-order predators such as coral trout, red bass, chinaman fish, mackerels and moray eels.
Over 400 non-lethal cases of ciguatera food poisoning have been recorded in Australia and tropical countries such as French Polynesia report thousands of cases every year.
