i use a white rag or anything white on a bit of rio bar with a hook bent into the end, walk around the rocky ledges waving it around holes and crevases, see the tenticle come out and stick the rio bar down the hole and poke him couple times, he'll grab that bar and wont let go, just a matter of pulling him out the hole then, cotts rock ledges is my fav spot for this on a lowish tide
dunno why but they love white, i didnt believe it myslef until i was shown and tried it myself, they guy that taught me is and old italian fella and has a freakishly good eye at spotting an occy from 2-4metres away, in 1-2inches of water, try it, u dont need to soak the white rag in the water just the tip or even nothing at all, suprized me.
If you mix a bit of detergent in a bottle full of water, poke a small hole in the lid and use it to spray some on the surface of the water to cut down the amount of reflection allowing you to see them easily.
dont think this guy uses oil or detergent, ive seen wat oil and detergent does hes just been doing it for soo many years hes got an eye for it, maybe luck but even with rod and reel fishing he's a freak

Sounds like there has been a number of years practicing. With practice comes luck. I recall a quote from either Gary Player or Arnold Palmer (there seems to be some debate) both professional golfers, anyway it was "the more I practice the luckier I get".
Think about it. I don't think it is too far off the mark.
hes 60 odd, and been fishing in this beautiful country of ours for a long time so i think hes got bucket loads of luck and i know what you mean, practice makes perfect! but what is perfection? something you look at? something you do? or just something that comes natural?
