what's a Good quality mono

G'day fella's (and girlz) can anyone point me in the right direction as to a good monfilament line to put on my Saltiga surf, I'm running 15kg but think 8kg or 10kg would be better , I havn't respooled a reel with mono for a looong time and was wondering what the go-to stuff is these days.

CHEERS, Brendan / Maverick.

i would go with low stretch

Sun, 2011-01-16 17:11

i would go with low stretch aswell , i actually bought this purple salt like or something along those lines from ocean side which was really good aswell. im gonna disagree with berkley is the breaking strain is awsome but its alot thicker then other lines of the same weight class when iv compared them before.

+1 Berkley Big Game. may be thicker compared to some lines but is the little bit of extra line going to make much difference i highly doubt it, thicker also means more abrasion resistance.

spot on.....

Thinner diameter means less abrassion resistence so keep that in mind. Berkley biggame boosted up there diameter so the wear & tear is better and the line still lands big fish.

Many of the guys in the tackle industry use this line, Ryan rates its highly!

I use mainly Platypus Pretest but did try the Berkley in 8kg last year. Had a good day and got 2 Blacks and a Sail so I suppose it passed the test.

Good to see you back after a bit of break Mav :p.

I went stren gold on mine. Pretty similar to the big game, though may not be quite as supple (i forget). I rather like its bright orange as opposed to the blue or clear big game. Much easier to see your line in the water if you need to position the boat or see where its going in the surf. Supposed to be the same quality as the big game as well.

I like Schnieder line

Sun, 2011-01-16 19:36

have used it since I was a kid and is great stuff. The other mono I like is Tortue. Nice tough mono which I would describe as a hard line if you get what I mean!!

For beach fishing I use platinum. I personally don't see the need to run pre-tested lines for beach fishing... or anything other than game fishing.

i use lo stretch on 2 reels, but i must say it wears relatively easily. saying that, its a good line, and id reccomend it. havnt used much more good quality mono, cept for stren gold (40lb) and that stuff is thick as shit!

Sun, 2011-01-16 21:22

Are you gonna be casting/beach fishing much? if so the low stretch or platinum, being a fair bit thinner, might be the go.

yea you can say thinner means less abrasion resistance, but another way to look at is that for the same diameter and roughly the same abrasion resistance the platipus lines are stronger than the berkleys etc. Hope that makes sense the way i explained it.

I reckon boat fishing go berkley big game, land based go low stretch or platinum.

Berkley

Sun, 2011-01-16 23:21

We've used platypus Platinum & Pretest lines over the years and personally "we" dont rate them but each to their own.

Berkley Biggame and Stren (similar) are the go!
