What to do with your boat during a cyclone
Submitted by pale ale on Sat, 2010-12-04 12:30
I have recently purchased a 6.5m Signature and dont have a suitable garage to hide it away from cyclones.
What do you guys do to protect your boat through a cyclone. Just concrete tie downs or are there any other tricks?
With my tinnie, I just put 200 litres of water in it to stop it blowing away.
Looks like I've got some concreting to do!

cyclone
i dont put water in it, boats are not designed to take pressure on the inside of the hull
i usully attach it to the car and put some car stands under the chassie rails of the trailer before i tie it down. If you tie it down without putting blocks under the rails then you put all that extra loads on your trailer springs and they can develop a memory.
remember mate, it is insured as well.

More weight needed
Go out and buy a pallet of your favourite beer (Pale ale) Rigger, then place it on the deck of the boat to weigh it down. Invite a heap of mates over for a cyclone party and that should solve the problem. Win win situation for you and your mates, and if it doesn't go to plan the insurance will be the back stop. Good to see you're having a productive day at work :)

Drinking might void insurance?
ahaha I used to love cyclone parties when I lived in Tom Price, but in Karratha I tend to take things a little more seriously. I have recently got some 2 tonne lifting lugs (fell off the back of a truck) and had them welded to the bottom four corners of my carport.
I have heard of people welding lugs to a 200x200 plate and dynabolting to the concrete. I also believe many people here drive a few star pickets into their lawn, but the risk with that is all the rain making them easy to pull out.
I'm guessing if you still lose your boat, then there probably wasn't much you could have done anyway!! Just have good insurance!!!!

We're in the same boat Pale Ale!
We have a 5.5m centre console that doesn't fit under our carport. This is the first year we don't have access to a shed. We went out and hired a big masonary drill and put 2 anchors in the driveway and welded 2 D shackles to the carport. I agree with Brad about NOT filling it up with water and putting 4 carstands under it before tying it down. I rang the insurance company to check my policy and they said as long as I make a 'reasonable effort' to secure it- it was covered for all cyclone damage. Here's hoping it doesn't come to that!

In my view what you have done is make a 'reasonable effort'
In your position however I would advise the insurance company of the measures you have taken and seek written confirmation from them that those measures constitute 'reasonable effort' from their perspective.

Yeah, I was never gonna fill
Yeah, I was never gonna fill my Haines with water. I just do that in my little tinnie to stop it blowing away.
I have insurance with club marine and their policy does say "reasonable effort" or similar. So I suppose if I have it anchored down and remove the clears that is about as reasonable as I can do.

yep
But like allrounder has said, if you have it on paper from them saying that its reasonable then its pretty much water tight. As you know with insurance companies, any chance to get out of paying and you can be gauranteed that they will try it.

Go out to your industrial
Go out to your industrial area and ask a few of the business owners if you can store it in their warehouse. I have a couple of places lined up in the case of a cyclone, costs me a carton and can store it within a couple of hours.
Warehouses built up here are all built cyclone rated so it's a fair bet that it's as safe a place as any.

Does it have afold down bimini
I have got tie downs at my house already but in two minds about leaving the cover on or taking it off and folding it down,I have a 8m x8m shed but boat wont fit. There are already alot of guys who have space booked in the lia so you might have to do some ground work.Having lost the house in Hedland when growing up I dont think much is going to help if we get a cat 5.

There are two types of people ,do'ers and watchers
Right now the do'ers are the doing it
And the watchers are watching us do it

Nah, she doesnt fold down, but the clears will come off.
Starting to hope we miss out on cyclones this year. Usually I look forward to a couple days off work getting on the piss. But have also purchased a house now and got heaps of work to do if a cyclone is coming (shade sails over pool etc.)

I have an aquarium outside too with a barra in it. I dont think the wind would blow it over, but flying objects might smash it. Dont have room inside for it either.
What to do???
