Volvo V8 (260 AQ Motor) Electronic Ignition
Hi all
Quick question about about my Chevy V8 in a 24ft Ally Cruiser (Chevy V8 & Volvo 260AQ are the same).
Just fully re-built my motor and after 2 test runs is still running like shit.
My motor has had a complete re-build, carby has been re-conditioned, new wiring harness put in (Mechanic said it might have a voltage drop) and all new fuel. (Took 3 months for rebuild- mechanic said might run rough due to stale fuel)
Anyway long story cut short,
I have a Volvo 260AQ V8 motor that has just been re-built.
On the first run after the motor was installed we noticed it would idle ok (Not perfect) but would still idle.
If we gave the engine a rev (Idle 900) to about 1200-1300rpm it would just break down and die in the ass.
We stuffed around with the timing (180 deg) and all of the above to no joy.
After disscussion with the Carby man he suggested check the Advancing weights in the distributor(Who would have thought)
After inspection they were all siezed and obuisly were'nt advancing when need be (Fingers crossed this is the problem still haven't put new dissy in yet)
What I would like to know is that now I am replacing my dissy I am going to go electronic.
Firstly is there a problem with electronic ignition in an enclosed engine hatch.
Secondly the old volvo dissy had a fire retardent mesh covering holes on the bottom of the housing-electronic dosen't. (Does this affect insurance having an aftermarket dissy with no fire re-tardent escape)
Thirdly do you need to run a balluste resister with electronic ignition.
Any help, experiences & advice would be greatly appriciated.
Cheers all.........

Hi doublej, firstly there will be no problem with you running electronic ign in an enclosed engine hatch, secondly most elect ign run straght on 12v but check the installers info, and on the insurance thing i wouldnt think you would have any probs because or the fact electronic ign works on hall effect.ie no sparks like a point system would have.Pays to check with you insurace co just incase.hope this info helps ya.

I developed a similar problem
I developed a similar problem on my previous boat, Volvo 5.7 GI and found that water was spraying on the leads and dizzy from a pin hole in one of the fittings at the rear of the motor. Took a while to find it and work it out. Mine would start running rough above 2000rpm as the water pressure built up.
