Top reel I reckon, I allmost had the funds for one cost factor around $700 was going to use it mainly for surf fishing, but mr bill came along may be this year.

Plenty of people use them jigging with no problems. They are built tough.

Im sure it was designed for beach fishing to start with but thats not to say you couldnt use it elsewhere. At the end of the day its still a fishing reel, not a dedicated beach reel or anything specific.

Not that good?? These are just opinions, they are tough as nails and not the best looking reel but its bullet proof. It is a personal preference thing as I prefer more refined Japanese reels.

If its not good, ppl wouldnt pay $1000's for it.

I'm taking all answers with an open mind.

There are always two ways to look at things.
One is buy reasonable quality and replace it 1-4 years down the track,lets say a $350 reel.
The other is spend big time on a proven product that will last 4-8 years and spend $1000.
Not hard and fast rules but you know what I’m trying to say..
So i'm thinking....
My thoughts was to have a smaller size VS which holds heavy line any way and fish a large variety of fish and have a smaller reel not VS for the smaller fish.
Didn’t want to sit their thinking which reel should I use today looking at 30 on the shelf .It's not the first time iv'e gone through that.

Pin yourself down to only a few that can be used for what’s needed that day.
Still would need even a cheaper back up for a number of reasons.
I should get away with owning 4 reels.

The only question in my mind with the VS's is the drag system, it's not something the manufacturers/distributors go into when endorsing their product, Two things I look at when purchasing a reel is No/type/placement of bearings and drag material/capabilities.

Life time warranty !!! You won't be replacing it EVER !!!! Fished my 250 off the beach on a 10' ugly and got great distance in the casts even with 80lb braid. The pressure you can impart on your fish is amazing. As for the drag, smooth as silk and can be cranked up to 45lb !!

My skinny little nephew (howdy Shaun) put me onto the Staal's after tormenting him about spending that kind of money on a rod and reel. But when he brought a LARGE ray to the boat UPSIDE DOWN without breaking a sweat he had me hooked as well !!!!!!!

Off the boat there is no issue (maybe depth). Have used it for both bottom bashing and jigging with good success due to being able to keep the fish off the bottom avoiding being busted off !!!!

Are u sing braid or nylon,or have u purchased a extra spool for both.

I've got 80lb braid on my 250 and 50lb on my 150 !!! Since switching to braid I won't use nylon again !!! Just remember a twitch is all you need to set a hook rather than a full on pull (especially in deep water)!!! You just need to use your rod a little more with braid. EG: dipping your rod when the fish takes a hard run as you don't have the stretch of nylon !! Mind you with a Staal you just give it shit !!!!!!!!!!!!
