They change colour and give off weird dust after being in the sun awhile.

Wed, 2012-10-10 23:12

Hmmmm, well i guess they wont really be left outside too much. I mean i would take them out of the boat after each outing and store them in my shed, where they can dry out too. I actually only got out in my boat 18 times last finnacial year. So i guess they wouldn't get too much exposure to the sun/elements. For $120 i might just give it a try anyway. If it fails at least everyone on here will know not to try the same idea.  :-P

 I've never used that

Wed, 2012-10-10 21:46

I've never used that material on a boat deck before but I have used it for other applications where it gets wet occasionally & found that water can get trapped in it & cause mould, even when allowed to dry extremely thoroughly. I will suggest artificial lawn as a cheaper & better alternative. Artificial lawn is designed to allow water to run straight through it so mould isn't a problem, it is soft under foot, grippy even when wet & because it's not loop pile like carpet dropped hooks don't get snagged in it. I used the shortest pile I could find (9mm) in my boat & it cost me $15 per square meter from bunnings. Cheaper & better than anything else on the market that I'm aware of.

Did you have to Glue it down

Wed, 2012-10-10 21:51

Did you have to Glue it down to the floor to stop it from moving about? Or does it pretty much stay in place under its own weight?

Out of interest i would have thought that being 'Gym' mats they wouldnt soak up water, or in a Gyms case sweat? I have seen them used in Gyms before and havent found them to be ponging of sweat which i would have thought would indicate they dont absorb water?

Give it a go

Wed, 2012-10-10 22:06

I think it's a good idea , tend to stand alot on boats so the cushioning would be great...not going to break the bank for $120 see how it goes ...I glued carpet down on mine and then from behind the seats to the transom ( main work , traffic area ) put a extra loose piece on top again and just take that out for cleaning

It will stay in place under

Wed, 2012-10-10 22:07

It will stay in place under it's own weight but the edges can curl a little so it pays to cut it a little larger than you actually want it so that the edges naturally curl up the sides of the boat. I ended up tacking mine down because I remove my deck when I clean the tinny & I got sick of having to put the lawn back in place after I put the floor back in it.

Gym mats are notorious for trapping moisture & bacteria within them. Gym mats that don't get properly disinfected are the most common cause of staph infections. The staph bacteria can live within the pores of the mat & then causes infection when it comes in contact with an open wound. Moisture can be trapped in those same pores & will eventaully cause mould if the mats are not completely dried after each use.

Wed, 2012-10-10 23:19

Guess the only thing i dont like about the artifical turf though is i REALLY hate the feeling of it on my bare feet, just my personal feeling though. If i had to go down that path i would probably just get Marine carpet again.

You paint a bleak picture on the hygiene of those mats, especially ones in Gyms, and to think i lie down on those things to do sit ups!!!! Though for my application i would be removing them after each outing and storing them in my shed to dry. And they would probably only get used less thn 25 times in a year, the amount of days i would probably get out in my boat  :-(

I gave it a try(took a water bottle into bunnings and asked one of the staff if i could wet it and see) and it didnt seem any slipperier when wet than when my old marine carpet is wet. Maybe there are differnt grades of foam they use, some more slippery than others?

Been out on boat that had them on and it was terrible! The top surface was textured and good underfoot, but out jigging at the barges and the FADs, we quickly found out that that they werent so grippy on otherside. Been to a waterslide? What kind of mat do they give you?  So with a bit of water on deck, any sideways movement (like leaning over the gunwhale) means they can slip right out under your feet which is not fun. This was on a glass boat with those little dimples on the deck, but a clean ali surface may do so as well.

Thu, 2012-10-11 09:03

The Matt just seems like the same EVA foam Gym mats you would see on the floor of Gyms, mainly under the weight machines. I wouldnt be to concerned about it slipping around on my ally floor as it would be trimmed to fit snug around the edges of the deck, seats, etc so i would imagine it wont be able to move around much, as opposed to just having some sheets free floating around on the deck.

Is that how they had them on the charter you went on?e.g just some sheets laid around the edges where the fishos would usually stand, or was it across their whole deck?

Starting to think maybe Marine Crapet is the go again. Anyone know where you can get Marine Carpet that is at least 2.16m wide(width of widest part of my deck)? Seems most places i have seen only do 2m wide, and i would like to be able to have one big piece put in that i can pull in and out. As said dont want to glue it.

Autex Raider Carpet

Thu, 2012-10-11 09:51

Try this mob Buz in kewdale  http://nolanuda.com.au/pages/gallery/marine.php it's real marine carpet they're a wholesaler so if you have a abn # and a bit of sweet talking should be less than $40 lineal metre @ 205cm wide not sure if they stock wider..

Cheers foor that Chris. Gave them a bell and yep they did the Raider 2m wide for $39.65p/m

Though the guys reckon that the Decord 2m wide was a bit better being 1260gsm as opposed to the Raider 800gsm. Was for $59.80p/m, bit more than the Raider but guessing it would wear better over time. Think i might go down this path as i can then just buy 3m of it, lay the old carpet ontop and just trace cut it to fit. Annoying thing will be down one side of the boat there will be a space of about 10cm of no carpet as my deck is 209cm at front and 216cm at rear. Oh well have to put up with it if i dont want to glue.

Thu, 2012-10-11 11:24

Was on a trailer boat but the skipper had the mats cut to fit snuggly for the whole deck. The problem is as your foot starts to move sideways (it doesnt take much force) the first mat starts to slip, it then pushes against the next jigsaw mat. That fold (or the next one) then starts to push upwards until it flexes enough for you to have lost your footing enough, or for the jigsaw joint to pop open completely sliding out. This all happens quickly of course. These mats were the thick type too, maybe 20mm+ (not 12-15mm).

As nearly all the mats have a nice texture on top, but are completely smooth on the bottom, unless theres something for them to grip on, they'll just slip like a waterslide mat when water gets underneath them. It doesnt matter if it covers the whole deck even in one peice if the force cant stop at the other side of the boat before the matting buckles.

They're quite nice underfoot though. Perhaps if you sprayed the deck with contact adhesive, put something on it, left it a few minutes then ripped it up to give a texture, then when thoroughly dry put the mats on there'd be something to grip and they might not slip? Thick grip tape at grids might work too, but if a single sheet can slip over the deck easily, putting them in a interlocked grid will still slip as the jigsaw joints can pop open easily if they bend.

Yeah good points about them

Thu, 2012-10-11 11:57

Yeah good points about them wanting to probably lift at the jigsaw joint. These Mats from bunnings though have textured grip on both sides so i imagine it would be 'better' for griping underneath.

In saying all that i think i am probably just going to go some Autex Raider Carpet. Cheap and will probably do the job my old carpet did, and be easier to cut/install.

Thanks for that Liam, but i have had some experience standing on those 'holed' rubber matts(not on a boat) and reckon they are very uncomfortable after a while for bare feet. Probably not a drama if you wear shoes or thongs onboard, but i prefer bare feet all day. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

The rubber mats they use in kitchens and bars also could be worth a look, the hollow tubing stuff. Good grip, soft and easy to clean

I have some of the EVA jigsaw

Thu, 2012-10-11 11:12

I have some of the EVA jigsaw gym/martial arts mats and have used then under the inflatable pool. the ones i have are not textured (better quality then the bunnings ones) but I wouldn't use them in the boat as the are slippery when wet (and thats without any fish related slim etc).  I have blue marine carpet in my boat.  Its rubber backed, doesnt slip about, very comfortable on bare feet/doesn't get hot.  It's very short pile (not loop pile) and hooks don't generally get stuck or are easy to remove (unlike the grey striped stuff I had previously).  Mine is not fixed in anyway and pulls out and cleans easily with a hose down.  It has lasted 3 years to date and is still like new.

Cheers

Paul

Cheers for the advice Paul. Steering away from the EVA mat idea now. Where did you get the rubber backed Carpet from? Most the Marine Carpets i have been enquring about arent rubber backed.

Thu, 2012-10-11 16:53

Ok after all this um and ah'ing i just went the easy option and got my self some marine carpet from Nolans in Kewdale. Got some Grey Autex Raider stuff. 3m for $95, bloody good price IMO and even if it does only last a few years(last stuff lasted 14 years though) it wont cost much to replace it again. Now to go by some hook blades to cut it in to fit.

Thanks, for all the advice and opinions on this subject guys.
