Trolling Tips and Techniques

Just wondering what everybody does to ensure they have every chance of hooking that fish of a lifetime when trolling. Would it be having a veriety of different lure brands or styles in the water? maybe varying lure colours or the distance the lures are set back? using baits as opposed to artificials and when? whatever it is, i would love to hear it. I am always looking for new ways to help tune my fishing skills and hopefully this topic will help me do just that. Hopefully a lot of people will find this topic and it's information useful.

What species of fish are you targeting? It does help to have a target fish, but you will still pick up bycatch by doing this. Matching the size of the bait the fish are feeding on is fairly important. Have trolled alot of tropical species. Coral trout, mackeral, tuna, barra, jacks,even golden snapper and black jews. When you troll for demersal species it is important to have a lure that will dive to the depth you are trolling. eg: 4 metre diver for 3.5 to 5 metres of water. Having said that it really depends on what fish your chasing!!

if I knew the answer I would a millonaire.....as anyone else would be....
just got to find what is happening on the day. Barney is right match the hatch....!! But attention to detail is paramount with terminal tackle....
personally I troll all different types of lures and change repeatedly, read the water and birds, feel the energy, vary speed and understand fish biology etc, until you find what the fish are doing. one lure may catch all the fish one day but nothing the next...hence experiment. sometimes trolling wont catch fish..?? A lot of peolple don't like trolling cause it is boring, but to me it is very challenging..got to be on your toes to catch fish..
fish of a lifetime..... well just be ready and confident and patience.

have favourite lure(s) but same argument as shimano Vs diawa. It's just what you like..... fish of lifertime to me is memory not size......

Two Words
Sharp Hooks - seriously does not matter what else you do if you do not obey this rule. Good knots and new appropriate sized leader are another of the golden rules. No point towing all the fancy most expensive stuff in the world if you ignore these three very simple rules.
