Todays dhufish in 5m
in the last 8 years diving off perth i have encountered spaniards,kings,sambos, pinks but never a dhufish underwater.
about a week ago i went out with a mate to my usuall spot, and was greeted by about 30-40 undersize kings as soon as i hit the water. as they where to small i kept on swimming until about 15 minuites later i arrived at what seemed to be a pack of big buff breams at about 3-5m of water. At a closer inspection there lies what i estimaited to be a 6-8kg dhuie. (at this point i was in a bit of shock) I took a deap breath and reached the bottom only to face a very long range and difficuilt shot.. and so i snuck up a bit closer only to see the only dhufish ive ever seen (whilst diving) piss off into the blue. (spearing while freediving is much harder then what some ppl may think) got back home told dad only to get laughed at...
today we went out to the same spot, i was on the hunt to shoot this dhufish. on the way to the spot dad was joking with me saying his going to shoot it and that i have no chance. dad was right within 10 minuites of being in the water he saw his first dhufish ever (sized measured 54cm) and had it on the end of his spear in no time. (only in 5m of water) I must admit he showed me how it was done lol...
luckily the dhufish i saw the week befor was bigger and had a ~10cm cut on his back, keeping me at peace with dad knowing there is a 6-8kg dhuie out there with my name on it lol

must be pretty good at
must be pretty good at sizing up your fish under the water 4cm isnt much to play with , i find things look a lot bigger under water....

I think fish are 20% bigger underwater, i may be wrong?
Lucky the dhuie was legal,54cm is close.

absolutly right fish do look bigger underwater, however the dhu appeared sized and indeed it was.
generaly speakin we dont shoot fish that seem border line...(take into acount this was a dhuie and it appeared bigger then 50cm and being the first one my dad has ever seen he went for it) and my taste-buds are glad he did.
those kings we saw maybe one or two was sized but we didnt shoot any, infact we trolled later on and got one to find it still has another 5cm to go. we try and do the right thing (shooting only sized fish, and shooting only the amount we need). I think i respect my privllage to spearfish and i dont think we abuse it in any way.

I have free-dived to 12m
I have free-dived to 12m with reasnoable bottom time however my smoking habbits have made it a lot more difficuilt this season, atm im diving about 8m with bottom time. probly hit 14m but thats goin down and comin straight back up lol... im hoping that by the end of summer, with a bit of training and less ciggs, to be able to do the 14-15 with reasnoable bottom time (enough to shoot a fish under a ledge).
