Thinkin' of buying a cheap dinghy - advice please?

Hi fishwrecked.

So lately i've been wondering how best to spend my $900 that'll be coming my way - this led me to think about getting myself a cheap small boat.

My question is how likely is it for me to be able to get a boat, trailer and motor for the $900 or maybe even up to $1500?

Also if it's even a possibility, what conditions will I be able to fish with it? (I'm thinking just the river and maybe a little out to sea in calm conditions?)

I've been thinking about getting my skippers ticket anyway but do you need one for all forms of watercraft with a motor?

Cheers guys!

Also...would anybody have any that they'd want to sell!?!?!!! There HAS to be! :) :) :)

you dont need a ticket if

you dont need a ticket if its under 5hp

you wont get much for $900 but if you add a bit more you might be able to get something thats reasonable, all depends on what size

up 12 foot you could fish the sound or just out past , take note you will need an EPIRB if more than 2 mile out from memory and thats another $500plus

plus flares , l/jackets etc etc, it all adds up , what starts at cheap never ends up that way

i got given a 2.5m

Thu, 2009-03-12 21:45

i got given a 2.5m fiberglass boat and we used with our engine from our tender so when were not taking out our bigger boat we will take that out, its tiny but my bro and i hav had some wicked little adventures and even caught some good fish, that just shows you dont need to spend much to get out and catch some fish, start off in the river to build up your experiance cause the ocean is a whole different story. and if you get a bigger engine than 6hp you will need your RST and that goes for all types of craft either way its a good idea as it will give you more experiance and teach you about using perths waterways. there are a few tinnys for sale on here but i think there a bit too much for what your looking at. have a look at boatpoint.com that seems to be he best site with qhite a few local boats up for sale

cheers

should get a second hand tinny no worries

Thu, 2009-03-12 21:47

$900, might be pushing it to get something with a motor and trailer for that though. might get a tinny with trailer without motor if you scower the second hand ads, might have to spend a little more...

Im a big fan of reliability in a motor, nothing worse than every time you go out wondering if your gears gonna get you home, therefore I would sugggest saving a little longer to buy a new or near new motor for it.

To put it very basically - if youve got a hull that doesnt leak, a newish motor that starts first pull and will just keep on running you really cant go too far wrong.

If its just a tinny a little 8hp or something generally arent tooooo expensive, have a look on ebay, most of them are in eastern states but it gives you a good guide of what things are generally worth.

how ya goin mate

my names matt, i bought my first tinnie 4 100$ in the qoukka it was a 3.3metre savage. the hull was a bit dented and old but it floated alright, after bying the boat i built a tralier with the old boy using the springs axel and wheel from and old box trailer and some square steel tube, bought some rollers and a whinch. then bought a 9.9hp evinrude 4 250dollars. after the rego of the boat and trailer the whole thing was about $1000. had no trouble catching a feed of herring whiting and squid off hillarys and ocean. later sold the 3.3savage and bought a 3.4 stacer 4 $60 wich had a couple of leaks, just needed some alloy putty and was right. sold the savage 4 $150. iv now got a brand new 370 stacer and 15 horse power mercury which i bought brand new and put on the old trailer. i sold the package 4 $5000 2 years agoand had a call from the buyer a month ago and my dad bought the boat back 4 $3500 still in original condition. i reckon u could get set up if ya looked around 4 a 50$ - $150 hull, a cheap motor and built ya own trailer. if your interested in the structure and desidhn of the trailer send us a personal message and ill make ya a plan of it on the weekend or during next week.

Be aware

my 4.4m Quinnie tinnie cost me $500 on a licensed trailer with a 98 Evinrude Elan 35hp from a mate of my young blokes at Offshore Marine In Busselton before they closed down. It was an ex Penguin Island tour boat. The hull was pretty battered and the trailer looked a bit sad. Costs so far are: Motor service $285, welding rivet holes, cracks and fitting a floor frame, rocket launchers etc $1700, new springs, new trailer tyre, tow hitch, rollers and subframes about $400, awful runny home paint job $200, carpet and marine ply $350, anchor and rope $75, new lights $110, Fishwrecked sticker $10, rego and transfers $135. As they said on the for sale sign "Project" so for a total cost of $3765 or thereabouts plus 50 odd hours of labour i have my cheap boat. Upside is the motor is a cracker and it goes really well - downside is 4.4m is a bit of a handful on the ramp in anything less than a dead calm. So i will be advertising it soon as a straight swap for a 3.5 to 3.7 m which is easier for me handle. Since buying the boat i have seen seperately a couple of dinghys, trailers and probably ok o/b's which if bought as parts would give you a nice little bay and river outfit around the $1000 for the lot. wopjrb has the right idea if you have a bit of patience.

At the moment quite a few people are selling their boats and as winter comes people will generally sell as a few blokes mentioned look in the quokka in the marine section and also the swap section might find a bargin.

Life is short so live it fast

hey guys well

hey guys

well thanks heaps for all the input and advice really appreciate it!

I think the plan for me will be to maybe buy a hull, o/b and trailer separately (unless I find a wicked deal) and sort of build up an outfit like that. I think i'll also try saving up a bit more coin to get something more reliable.

Also, if anybody has anything of that sort for sale!....you know who to tell!!

hi guys, so have been

Sun, 2009-04-05 23:08

hi guys,

so have been scouring the 2nd-hand ads.

Found an awesome boat but not sure if it'll be too big or not. It's a 3.98m fibreglass w/ 25hp o/b (If i buy obviously i wont be using it before I get my RST).

It looks great and comes w/ everything i'd need i'm just wondering if that size is too big for me or not? For somebody to use by themselves or with a mate, and in what conditions as well.

iv got a 3.7 alli mate

Sun, 2009-04-05 23:17

id prefer to go out by my self because the boat handles better and is alot more buoyant. you'll most likely get swamped in over a metre of swell and 20 - 30knt wind so i'd recomend staying inshore unless the conditions are calm and expected to stay calm - matt

struth, better get a beer then

i'd most likely be going out

Sun, 2009-04-05 23:24

i'd most likely be going out into the river or inshore areas (i.e. not far out) and in relatively calm weather as well. I'm just wondering whether it'd be too difficult to launch and retrieve by myself or if 4m would be manageable. It sounds like you manage your 3.7 just fine though.

I launch and retrieve my 4.8 platie alone no worries mate,

Mon, 2009-04-06 07:13

Thats a fair bit heavier than a little tinny, just have to be well set up, organised and not root around, a little tinny will be no worries for you to retrieve.
