Temperature gauge and probe thoughts

Gday guys, having recently driven my 60 series Cruiser to Broome and back, I have decided that I need a bit more info than what the temp gauge gives me. I am comsidering the Redarc gauge with egt and boost, and an optional digital temperature readout. What are people's thoughts on the surface-mount vs probe-type sensor? The probe would give actual water temp (but I am unsure of where to put it as I want to keep the factory gauge), whereas the surface-mount sensor would give actual engine temp, and is easy to fit.... any experience or thoughts would be greatly appreciate!

thanks

Drew

what engine you have ?  might be able to fit onto thermostat housing. Go the probe ( from a ex toyota mechanics view )

Drill small hole in the housing ( make sure no pressure in cooling system ), tap / cut correct thread use some thread tape or high pressure sealant on sensor join the wires mout ya guage .. bobs ur uncle.. easy

 Thanks Fish-Hunter, it is

Thanks Fish-Hunter, it is the 12-ht. The factory gauge normally sits just below the quarter mark, but on the way to Broome fully loaded with gear and the outside temp over 40, the gauge rose to just over the quarter mark unless I slowed to 80-90km/hr. I have no idea if the engine temp was going up by 2 or 20 degrees... I will have a look to see if there is somewhere to drill and tap. My other thought was to buy a radiator hose sender adaptor, but this would mean cutting the top radiator hose into 2...

dont cut will give you more problems in long run of clamps lossing tension and corrosion build up etc

Yeah those top hose temp probes are rubbish!

Better off drilling and tapping a correct thread in a low pressure environment. Then thread seal and install for minimal fuss in the future.
