Surf Combo - Thinking about Alvey 650b
Submitted by XBCOOP on Wed, 2013-04-10 15:21
G'Day Guys,
Heading to Jurien soon and need a new Surf combo. My last one was a cheap chinese $50 12foot combo, crappy everything, heavy and a pain to cast, my 8fooy Shimano cast just as well.
I'm looking at spending up to 150 bucks this time so hoping to try something pretty good.
Been doing some research and alot of people like using the Alvey reels, I had a look and for roughly 160 Alvey have a rod and reel (650b) combo, the rod however is 13 foot. Sounds a little too big?
Mainly chasing Tailor and whatever else is out there.
Also line, thinking of getting some good braid.
Always used Eggbeaters in the past, so willing to try something new and sturdy.
Cheers

Dont use braid on beach alveys .......
Do not use braid on side casting Alveys. Just use a quailty mono. I generally use Platil in Pre Test and Lo Stretch.
They are great reels for the beach. They need very little maintenance and can be dropped in the sand and water without worry. There is a few tips you need to know when using Alveys. Search these forums for information, plenty around and easy to find.
The 13 footer is OK. I use 10' to 14' rods on my beach fishing.
Aim to have a rod that can handle 20lb line as its mid way line specification so you can lob big baits out or big sinkers in heavy swell and wind.
Ebay have them as well, and they sell very quickly when the price gets right. I would love to swap my now oldish gear for the new fancy vented 650 surf chanpions.
Dont forget to post your gear if you get some.

Check out www.surfcasters.iinet.net.au/UsingAlveyReels.html for all the tips on using Alvey reels.
The reel you'll see there (mine) is an Alvey 650BC lever drag model and I thoroughly recommend that model for beach fishing.
Stay away from braid on Alveys until or unless you are really experienced with using them.
Lo stretch mono in 8 or 10 kilo will handle any fish you'll catch.
A 13ft or longer low mount rod is ideal for an Alvey, but make sure you get a good quality rod with good line guides.
A good rod and reel will last many years and is worth the extra money.
Have sent you a PM.

Change of Heart
Ok, I went and played with an Alvey today, had a good look around and even cast a mates one. I'm not a big fan. Lucky I checked before getting one!
I think what I'll end up getting is a good solid Eggbeater style, the same style I've been using for 20 odd years now.
Any reccomendations?
on ebay they have several Pelagic combo's for sale at good prices, i also heard they come out of the same factory as do some fancy reels?
